China had already acquired the system, and according to news reports, Moscow had already started the delivery of an unspecified number of the S-400 missile systems to Beijing.

NEW DELHI: President Vladimir Putin was expected Friday to sign a deal in India worth more than $5 billion for the S-400 air defence system, despite USA warnings of sanctions against countries buying Russian military hardware.

The two leaders reserved most of their time during Mr. Putin's brief 22 hour visit for one-on-one interactions, spending three hours at dinner on Thursday and almost two hours on Friday in intense talks on a wide range of bilateral and global issues.

Qatar, China and Saudi Arabia have already bought or are planning to purchase the anti-aircraft missile weapon from Russian Federation.

India is the world's largest importer of military hardware, according to Mumbai-based think tank Gateway House, and has depended on Russian Federation for political support as well as billions of dollars in military hardware.

"India being described as the bright star has become the sixth largest economy and is on way to become the fifth largest", the prime minister said.

The contract was signed during President Vladimir Putin's trip to India.

Almost 70 percent of India's present-day defence equipment was procured from Russian Federation, according to India's defence ministry.

India has already given indications that it will go ahead with the deal notwithstanding the U.S. sanctions.

"We are committed to building a new India".

India has requested a waiver from USA sanctions meant to punish Russian Federation for its annexation of Crimea and alleged interference in the 2016 U.S. elections.

He later was hosted for dinner by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg as both the leaders talked over a host of issues, including bilateral cooperation and strategic issues.

The US is in a hard position as it seeks to contain China through better ties with India, which like Washington has been unnerved by Beijing's growing assertiveness.

The law, known as the Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), threatens to impinge on India's massive defence trade with Russian Federation. Faced with public discontent, President Vladimir Putin proposed several measures - that were adopted by the State Duma - to soften the pension reform, including lowering the pension age hike for women to 60. The pacts including on cooperation on India's ambitious human space mission project Gaganyaan, were signed.

The last annual summit was held on June 1, 2017, during the visit of the prime minister to Russian Federation.

Speaking to India Today, Gasprom Bank's Representative in India Sergey Mitreykin said that the banking communities had been talking about this arrangement for the past two-three years and now because of the current environment taking, it was time to take some practical steps instead of just discussing them.

Moscow is also pushing for India's entry into the Nuclear Suppliers Group, a club of countries controlling access to sensitive nuclear technology.
