Internet Abuzz With Funny Reactions To First Presidential Alert

  • FEMA and the FCC will send Americans a pair of emergency alerts today

If you have a cell phone, it probably buzzed and beeped loudly Wednesday afternoon around 2:18 p.m. ET. A second alert two minutes later from President Donald Trump is scheduled through radio and television broadcasts. All smartphone users will receive an alert and the message will read, "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed", the message states.

The EAS Presidential Alert will read: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Emergency Alert System".

Trump's message was initially planned for September 20 but was postponed due to Hurricane Florence. It hadn't said yet whether the test went well. Some cell phones will receive the message; others will not. The law behind the cell phone notification system, which was passed in 2016, requires FEMA to run a test at least every three years.

The alert is part of an effort by the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Communications Commission to conduct a nationwide test of Wireless Emergency Alerts and the Emergency Alert System. The WEA system was established a decade ago and became operational in 2012.

As a matter of fact, the words "Presidential Alert" were a bit misleading.

Hollywood stars reacted with humor and sarcasm after receiving the first Presidential Alert.

In January, America's emergency management technologies made headlines when a state-level official mistakenly sent an alert to Hawaii residents warning them of an inbound ballistic missile attack. It's the first national Presidential Alert test, which will allow any sitting President to send nationwide emergency messages. Some got as many as four alerts on their phones; others didn't get any. "This is a test to make sure the alerting system works and that we can get that message out from FEMA in Washington, D.C.to all the phone carriers and then to the cell towers then does it get to everyone's phones".

The goal is to try out a pair of systems set up to notify the public of emergencies. "No action is required". Users can opt out of "emergency alerts" which means there's a way out in case they don't want to be notified in case of an emergency (but, it would be surprising if anybody would do that).

The judge asked a government lawyer if there were standards in place to prevent someone from using the system for political purposes.
