Speaking to reporters on the South Lawn of the White House before boarding a flight Tuesday, Trump said that the political climate in America today makes it hard to refute allegations, referencing claims of sexual misconduct by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh.

Questions about the scope of the FBI investigation emerged over the weekend amid reports that Senate Republicans were working with the White House to contain the number of witnesses and the allegations to be investigated.

Mark Judge, who has denied any wrongdoing, completed his interview with FBI agents as part of the reopened background investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct by Kavanaugh, said his lawyer, Barbara "Biz" Van Gelder.

While Trump's press conference was called Monday to discuss the trade deal struck Sunday between the U.S., Canada and Mexico, the questioning soon turned to the controversy surrounding Kavanaugh's nomination.

The White House aides and allies said Tuesday that they remained optimistic Kavanaugh would be confirmed but frustrated with the delay on a vote.

"Even if you want to discount what happened when he was 15 in high school and 18 in college, you can not discount what he is saying and professing at age 53 when it flies in the face of being truthful", Schumer said.

He then specifically addressed Kavanaugh's testimony last Thursday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, in which Kavanaugh denied Christine Blasey Ford's accusations that he sexually assaulted her over 35 years ago when they were teenagers.

He has at least one other Judiciary Republican on his side.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations.

No Republicans have indicated since last week's emotional session featuring Kavanaugh and Ford that they would vote against his nomination, although Arizona's Jeff Flake gave a conditional Yes, calling for a FBI investigation that Republicans had resisted. "We simply can't", Flake, who is retiring as a senator in January, told an event in Washington hosted by The Atlantic magazine.

Sex crimes experts - including a prosecutor Republicans hired to question Ford at a hearing last week - say it is common for women not to immediately report attacks to authorities and that such delays, even when they are years long, shouldn't be interpreted as evidence an allegation is false.

Walsh has said his client doesn't know Kavanaugh and has no recollection of ever being at a party with him.

After creating the fundraiser on Go Fund Me on Monday, the group had raised more than $4,000 in less than 24 hours. "But rather the fact that Judge Kavanaugh-now listen to this-drank beer in high school and in college, or the fact that he was rightfully angry", McConnell said.

"Wow! Just starting to hear the Democrats, who are only thinking Obstruct and Delay, are starting to put out the word that the "time" and "scope" of Federal Bureau of Investigation looking into Judge Kavanaugh and witnesses is not enough", the president tweeted.

Swetnick, who is represented by prominent Trump critic Michael Avenatti, said in a declaration that Kavanaugh was physically abusive toward girls in high school and at a house party in 1982 where she says she was the victim of a gang rape.

McConnell - who refused to hold a hearing for President Obama's high court nominee, Merrick Garland - charged that Democrats were trying to "move the goal posts" on Kavanaugh's confirmation. However, without investigators specifically focusing on the issue, they may be missing a vital line of inquiry that is relevant to Kavanaugh's serving on the Supreme Court.

The talking point started with Senate Judiciary Committee Ranking Member Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., and her criticism of Kavanaugh's "agressive and belligerent" testimony in his own defense. But he also said Senate Republicans are determining the parameters of the investigation and "ultimately, they're making the judgment".

The revised guidance is aimed at promoting an investigation that could tamp down Democratic criticism and satisfy on-the-fence Republicans about its thoroughness and fairness while also ensuring a fixed deadline to prevent the probe from becoming open-ended and spanning weeks.
