Waco wave pool closes after surfer dies from 'brain-eating amoeba'

An obituary for Stabile in The Press of Atlantic City describes him as an avid outdoorsman who loved surfing, snowboarding and fishing.

Page organizer Stephanie Papastephanou wrote that while Stabile was mowing his lawn on the afternoon of Sunday September 16, he suddenly experienced a severe headache and went to lie down.

The amoeba, also known as Naegleria fowleri, is "incredibly rare", but is naturally occurring in warm, fresh and sometimes stagnant water.

BSR Cable Park voluntarily closed after the CDC required testing of its waters after learning that a New Jersey man, who recently died, had been a guest at the park.

He died five days later and tested positive for Naegleria fowleri the day before his death, his family said.

It usually infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nose.

BSR Cable Park owner Stuart E. Parsons Jr. said BSR Surf Resort values its guests' safety and will continue to comply with requests from the CDC and local health department in the investigation.

Parsons said his resort's wave pool is in compliance with the CDC's "guidelines and recommendations concerning Naegleria fowleri". Once the amoeba enters the nose, it travels to the brain where it causes PAM, which is usually fatal.

The surf resort has closed pending the test results from the CDC, he said.

Stabile's family have launched a GoFundMe for the Fabrizio Stabile Foundation for Naegleria Fowleri Awareness, in hopes of educating more people about the infection.

It causes the nervous-system infection primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) by traveling up a person's nostrils and into their brain, but can not be transmitted if a person swallows water contaminated with the bug. The organizations statistics indicate that since 1962 there have been 143 confirmed cases, of which only four people survived.

Three of those survivors were treated with drug therapy, but in Stabile's case it was too late to administer the medication.
