A passenger plane has crashed into a lagoon while attempting to land at an airport in the Federated States of Micronesia, but everyone on board has been rescued, officials say.

The airline said in a brief statement that everybody aboard the Boeing 737 plane was able to safely evacuate, and the airline was making all efforts to ensure the ongoing safety of the passengers.

Passengers can be seen evacuating the submerged aircraft.

The accident happened in the tiny Pacific island nation of Micronesia.

Locals rushed out to the scene of the crash on small boats to help rescue passengers, who escaped the aircraft and were standing on the wings.

It is believed that the Boeing 737-800 was capable of carrying upto 160 people, but BNO News reported numbers of injured or fatalities were now unclear.

Air Nuigini is Papua New Guinea's national airline.

"We're trying to arrange a team to go there but I can not give you any more information because I simply don't have it", a spokesman told AFP.

The PNG Accident Investigation Commission was sending a team to the accident site, the ABC reported.
