  • Everson Griffen missed Sunday's Vikings game not with an injury but with cause for concern about his mental well-being

The incident involving Everson Griffen on Saturday at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis was the continuation of recent erratic behavior by the Vikings defensive end that, according to the Star Tribune, has him at a mental healthy facility for evaluation and treatment.

After being turned away from TCO Performance Center on Saturday, Griffen returned to Hotel Ivy in Minneapolis, where his wife, Tiffany, told police he had been staying for several days. He was eventually transported by ambulance to an area hospital for his well-being, despite jumping out of the vehicle at one point during a brief stop for crossing deer.

Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said Monday night in a statement that the team was "currently focused on Everson's well-being and providing the appropriate support for him and his family". "I just hope for the best for him".

Vikings defensive end Everson Griffen agreed voluntarily to be hospitalized following a series of incidents over the weekend that have teammates and family concerned for his mental health, according to a Minnetrista police report obtained by The Athletic.

Head coach Mike Zimmer confirmed at a Tuesday press conference that the Vikings ordered Griffen to undergo a mental evaluation in a letter sent to Griffen and his agent.

The situation began early Saturday morning when a Vikings staffer called cops to report the 3-time Pro Bowler was acting bizarrely and the team feared he could either hurt himself or others. He claimed to know the person who was filling up gas in his truck, though the man later told police he did not know Griffen.

Griffen was withheld from Sunday's 27-6 loss to the previously winless Buffalo Bills at U.S. Bank Stadium because of a knee injury and did not attend the game because of what the team called a personal issue.

Griffen recorded half a sack in each of the Vikings' first two games, bringing his career total to 62, which is 17th among active National Football League players.

Zimmer said he hasn't talked to Griffen since the Week 2 overtime game at Green Bay.

Griffen showed up shirtless outside the house of teammate Trae Waynes, who lives on the same street. "He's always been a really good model for us and obviously he's going through some tough times now". Griffen had gotten in the man's auto at a gas station and left his own vehicle behind.

The Minnetrista Incident Report states there are no criminal charges forthcoming against Griffen since no crime was committed. "It's about him getting better", Zimmer said.

Griffen has played all nine of his seasons with the Vikings and signed a four-year extension last year.
