JAXA, the Eastern explain agency, has efficiently landed two cell exploration robots on an asteroid hurtling by explain 200 million miles from earth. Blurred due to a rotating rover, JAXA points out the body of Hayabusa2 (the speck at the top) and the paddle of solar cells (appearing in blue).
Makoto Yoshikawa, Hayabusa2 Project Mission Manager I was so moved to see these small rovers successfully explore an asteroid surface because we could not achieve this at the time of Hayabusa, 13 years ago.
This photo shows the view from asteroid Ryugu from the Minerva-II1A. It sent a photo back to Earth as the spacecraft descended around 100 meters (328 feet) on the asteroid.
One dropped this past weekend, and in it were two 18cm diameter MINERVA-II rovers.
Scientists have just made history by landing the world's first unmanned drones on an asteroid.
The mission marks the first time that a rover has ever landed on an asteroid. JAXA said both the two Minerva-II-1 rovers are functioning nominally and transmitting data and images.
"We affirmed that both flying machines arrived on the surface of the space rock ryugu".
One of the pictures was captured right after separation of the rover from the spacecraft.
The next day, JAXA shared an impressionistic image of the landing site: the craggy dark stone of the carbon-rich Ryugu lit by a brilliant beam of light from the sun.
The rovers hop and float across the asteroid-thanks to its low gravity-to capture information including photos and the asteroid's temperature. Studying Ryugu could tell humanity not only about Ryugu's surface and interior, but about what materials were available in the early Solar System for the development of life.
On 3 October, the Hayabusa2 mothership will deploy a ship called Mascot, which was developed in Europe by the German Aerospace Center and France's space agency, CNES, and analyse the samples remotely.
"The Hayabusa 2 will also bring back a capsule with samples", JAXA explained in a news release announcing the asteroid's name, "thus the theme of "bringing back a treasure" is common".
