OnePlus is developing a flagship, premium TV that may be launched in 2019.
In the announcement post, OnePlus founder Pete mentioned the OnePlus TV would have the same design, image quality, audio experience as found in the OnePlus flagship devices. Lau added that decision of working on a TV stemmed from the fact that there are a total of four major environments that users spend their time in these days including the home, workplace, commute and the last "being on-the-move".
"We believe your TV has the potential to be so much more than where you watch your favourite shows", Lau said.
OnePlus might be best known for its nifty smartphones, which are marketed in approximately the same manner as Scientology. Currently, the company is taking feedback from its users on what to include in its new portfolio.
When we talked to Samsung about its new 8K TV, it was very candid saying "anyone can make an 8K TV" - you just go and by the parts.
OnePlus has had a pretty successful run, with the company's tagline, "Never Settle", driving it to launch handsets that boast top-tier features without breaking the bank.
India's smart TV is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 30.2 percent during 2018-24. Xiaomi is already doing well in this segment.
Pau describes the TV as a smart home device first and foremost - a hub for all your other devices.
The set is now dubbed the OnePlus TV, but the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is looking to its own online community to help pick the final name. It is also asking users to come up with a name for the TV, and the victor will be announced before December 2018. We call it: "OnePlus TV", said Lau in the forum post.
KitGuru Says: I am intrigued to see if OnePlus can bring the same quality designs with the tantalising price point its smartphones manage to carry.
According to the CEO, they plan to reshape the experience of home entertainment with the help of intelligent connectivity features on the OnePlus Smart TV. The company feels that these smart TVs still are quite traditional in terms of their functionality, connectivity and experience. "The world has come to know and love OnePlus and we will continue to apply across its new television division", the company stated in a press release.
