  • Apple Watch Series 4: What cardiologist think about it?

While Apple Watch Series 4 units across the globe will ship with the same hardware, the feature will be disabled outside the United States.

With two of them starting at $999 or higher in the United States, Apple appears to be taking advantage of a strong USA economy, low unemployment, and rising household wealth.

According to CEO Tim Cook, the new Apple generation has a lot of potentials to be, once again, the best generation of smartphones worldwide with a 98 percent satisfaction rate on the last iPhone X.

"The tech that Apple is working with is very rudimentary compared to what we'd do for someone in a hospital or health care setting", says Moore. The combination of the electrodes and the optical heart rate monitor make the Series 4 a powerful, at-home health device that can detect too-low and too-high heart rates, check for signs of atrial fibrillation, measure electrocardiograms, and more.

"We don't see Apple turning the iWatch into a regulated medical device approved for clinical diagnosis; to be clear, Apple Watch is approved for over-the-counter (OTC) use and is not a continuous monitor", J.P. Morgan analyst Robbie Marcus wrote in an investor note. Savings range from $52 to $56 off Apple Watch Series 4 Global Positioning System models, which is pretty decent considering the device was just announced.

The older models of Apple watch came with heart rate sensors and tracked calories burned, resting heart rate, the Apple Watch Series 4 has few new features.

While FDA has given Apple the necessary approval for the Apple Watch, it recognizes the fact that the wearable's reading might not always be accurate.

Physicians say the watch could be good for patients who have irregular heart rhythms but may not realize it.

Apple also announced updates that push its Apple Watch further into medical device territory. Notably, the company has also streamlined the Series 3 family in India, by silently discontinuing the stainless steel models and the Watch Edition variants. All of the data and stats collected are then synced with the health app and ECG can be shared as a pdf file with doctors. Following the launch of Series 4, Apple has dropped the Series 3 price to just $279. Consequently, the watch can now detect hard falls by analyzing wrist trajectory and impact acceleration.

If you haven't responded within a minute - perhaps you hit your head and blacked out -the watch can call 911 using your nearby phone or its own cellular transmitter and also send a notification with your location to your preset emergency contacts. One user said: "you cannot fall now!" He said such real-time data would change the way doctors work. It will automatically detect and initiate an emergency call.

Daniel Kivatinos, the co-founder and COO of Sunnyvale, California-based startup DrChrono, which produces an EMR platform for Apple devices, countered by saying Apple's relentless focus on the customer experience has already provided the pathway to wide scale usage in healthcare.
