Hurricane Florence downgraded to Category 1; still a risky storm

Despite the downgrade, Florence is expected to produce catastrophic flooding throughout the Carolinas. This part of the North Carolina coast, farther east than Wilmington and other points to the south, received Florence's first blow.
Rain was falling on the coast Thursday morning from the clouds on the farthest edges of the hurricane. Several airlines are allowing customers impacted by the hurricane to book flights again without paying additional fees but some fliers say that does not make finding flights any easier.
