Hurricane Florence downgraded to Category 1; still a risky storm

  • The Union Point Park Complex is seen flooded as the Hurricane Florence comes ashore in New Bern North Carolina

Despite the downgrade, Florence is expected to produce catastrophic flooding throughout the Carolinas. This part of the North Carolina coast, farther east than Wilmington and other points to the south, received Florence's first blow.

Rain was falling on the coast Thursday morning from the clouds on the farthest edges of the hurricane. Several airlines are allowing customers impacted by the hurricane to book flights again without paying additional fees but some fliers say that does not make finding flights any easier. Its forward movement increased slightly to 6 miles per hour (9 kph).

As of 11 p.m. EST, Florence was about 50 miles south of Morehead City, North Carolina, and 60 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina, according to the National Hurricane Center.

National Guard soldiers from the state, North Carolina and Virginia are mobilizing to prepare for hurricane recovery efforts. "Florence will then recurve across the western Carolinas and the central Appalachian Mountains early next week".

Gov. Roy Cooper of the Tar Heel state announced a State of Emergency ahead of the storm making its way to the coast.

The bulk of the three media briefings held by police chief Dan House surrounded how they were still anticipating the serious and catastrophic storm surge as well as hurricane force winds.

"There is going to be a lot of rain".

"These are folks who chose to stay and ride out the storm for whatever reason, despite having a mandatory evacuation", she said. He bluntly told people in the evacuation zones to leave quickly, saying: "Time is running out". We know it has forced the cancellation of almost 1,800 flights, with more to come, and that it has already caused serious flooding in coastal areas.

More than one million people have already been ordered to evacuate the coasts of North and SC and Virginia, with thousands more moved to emergency shelters, officials said.

Muriel Bowser, the Mayor of the nation's capital, has declared a state of emergency.

Now he anxious not about wind, but water, he said, "and the uncertainty of how much water we're going to get in the town, and what is that going to do for our capabilities, and recovery". Hurricane-force winds extended 80 miles from its center, and tropical-storm-force winds up to 195 miles.

A Hurricane Watch is in effect for.

The catastrophe modeling firm said 250,000 homes in North Carolina alone are projected to be affected by the storm. Along coastal communities, people trapped in homes by relentless flood waters awaited rescue, and tens of thousands hunkered down in shelters after fleeing their homes as the storm approached.

With gusts upward of 110 miles per hour already battering the Carolina coastline, storm surges have already started to destroy homes and overflow onto roads.

The size of a hurricane's storm surge does not factor into the category of a storm.

"The worst of the storm is not yet here, but these are the early warnings of what's to come", he said.

The East Coast isn't the only area facing the brunt of a storm.

While the Piedmont Triad does not now face a direct hit, we are still expected to face significant rain.

Tropical Storm Isaac is also moving westward across the eastern Caribbean. "Whether you have a house or not, when the storm comes it will bring everyone together". Up to 3 inches of rainfall are expected for parts of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Dominican Republic and Haiti, possibly causing life-threatening flash flooding.
