  • \'Life-Threatening\' Hurricane Florence Now Forecast to Bring \'Catastrophic\' Flooding

Even for a major hurricane, Florence is a beast like no other.

"Interests in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic states should monitor the progress of Florence". Two of those, hurricanes Charley and Frances, occurred in 2004, while the third, Hurricane Hugo, dates back to 1989.

None of the 17 storms in 2017 made landfall in Canada.

A Category 5 hurricane can generate sustained winds at 251 kilometres per hour. It could potentially become the "Harvey of the East Coast".

"We will do what's best for Virginia Tech moving forward as it relates to East Carolina and to the game", Virginia Tech athletic director Whit Babcock said in a Tuesday statement. He said there was no impact during 2016's Hurricane Matthew, which struck the state.

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday, Hurricane Florence had maximum sustained winds of about 130 miles per hour, a slight weakening from earlier the morning. That Category 4 storm destroyed 15,000 buildings and killed 19 people in North Carolina.

This kind of long-term attack portends severe destruction.

The vessels would get underway from Naval Station Norfolk and Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek to avoid potential damage from winds and tidal surges, said Colonel Rob Manning, a Pentagon spokesman. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed.

But astonishing winds aren't the biggest danger.

"This storm is going to be a direct hit on our coast", said Jeff Byard, associate administrator for response and recovery at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In May, the Canadian Hurricane Centre said its forecasters were expecting a "near-normal to above-normal" number of storms this season, a prediction that has proven to be correct - so far.

Because of the storm's potential damaging impacts, Pasquotank and Camden counties have joined the ranks of local governments in declaring a state of emergency.

Storm surge is basically a wall of seawater that could fall on and swallow parts of the coast.

By Saturday, total rainfall could accumulate to 20 inches (51 centimeters) - or even 30 inches in places - in parts of the Carolinas and Virginia, the NHC said.

The National Weather Service's Morristown office said Monday that three-to-four inches of rain are possible in upper East Tennessee, around the Tri-Cities, as a result of the hurricane.

And no one knows how far inland that coastal flooding will spread, or how many inland communities will be washed out.

Powerful storm surges and winds will pose deadly threats, as will long periods of heavy rain.

Other counties along North Carolina's coast are also issuing evacuation warnings, while SC has ordered the evacuation of all coastal areas beginning at noon on Tuesday. Tropical storm conditions could hit those areas by early Thursday, forecasters say.

"There's 25% more people living between Charleston (South Carolina) and Morehead City (North Carolina) than there were when Hugo was making landfall", CNN meteorologist Myers said. "So this is not just going to be a coastal threat". By comparison, Washington, D.C., gets an average of 40 inches of rain per year. The hurricane center predicts a "heavy rainfall event, which may extend inland over the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic for hundreds of miles". "If you live anywhere near the water, you need to get inland".

Meanwhile, as scientists continue their debate, Hurricane Florence is set to cross seas a degree or more warmer than normal on its path to the US east coast. Since 1851, only 10 major hurricanes have done so, and the most recent was Fran in 1996, 22 years ago.

South Carolina's governor ordered the evacuation of the state's entire coastline on Tuesday and predicted that a million people would flee as major roads reverse directions.

For many people, the challenge could be finding a safe refuge.
