Tennis world divided after Serena Williams' US Open outburst

An Australian newspaper defied global criticism and allegations of racism on Wednesday when it reprinted a controversial cartoon on its front page depicting U.S. tennis star Serena Williams having a temper tantrum at the U.S. Open.

Williams was later handed a point penalty for smashing her racquet in set two and was then docked a game after continuing her protests at Ramos, seemingly calling the official a "thief".

Naomi Osaka made the world sit up and notice her when she beat Serena Williams in straight sets in the US Open final.

The 2018 National Basketball Association rookie of the year tweeted: "To disrespect Serena Williams, a 23 time Grand Slam Champion, in this light is truly disappointing".

Much of the criticism of Williams has centred on how her actions had spoiled a precious moment for Osaka, who was even moved to apologise for beating the home favourite to a NY crowd angrily booing Ramos.

Over the past 20 years, male players have been far more likely to be fined for misdemeanours than their female counterparts.

The veteran cartoonist added Wednesday he had suspended his Twitter account to protect his family and friends. "It's about bad behaviour, certainly not race".

The Herald Sun instead focused on the conflict between Williams and her opponent, writing "such was the gravity of her angry remonstration it later left Osaka, who became Japan's first player to win a Grand Slam singles title, in tears". I've never been called for coaching, but the racket abuse, the verbal abuse, that's just part of the sport. "I'm all about gender equality and I think when you look at that situation these are conversations that will be imposed in the next weeks".

Strycova said Williams' tantrum was triggered by her desperation from Japan's Naomi Osaka playing better and leading her during the match.

"I'm genuinely embarrassed for you", Julie Stoddart said in a tweet, while Ken McAlpine tweeted: "Poor little newspaper needs a hug".

The baseball Hall of Famer confronted plenty of ugliness as he was pursuing Major League Baseball's home run record in the 1970s, and in an interview with Forbes, he said the criticism Williams has faced - including an Australian newspaper cartoon decried as racist - bears echoes of his own past.

Ramos called three rules violations against Williams during the event.

"Me, as a woman, take a lot of warnings".

"I drew her as an African-American woman, she's powerfully built, she wears these outrageous costumes when she plays tennis - she's interesting to draw".
