CBS says '60 Minutes' exec Jeff Fager out for violating company policy

  • '60 Minutes' executive producer Jeff Fager out at CBS

A CBS News reporter working on a story about Fager revealed that he had sent her a text message urging her to "be careful".

Meanwhile, Duncan has made the media rounds discussing the text and sharing why she chose to release the text. "Since Jeff Fager publicly referred to our exchange today, I want to be transparent about it".

"I don't care if 30 more women come forward and allege this kind of stuff", Arnold Kopelson reportedly said in a meeting at the time.

Yesterday, Designing Women creator Linda Bloodworth Thomason published a scathing op-ed in The Hollywood Reporter accusing ex-CBS president Les Moonves of destroying her career.

Asked on "CBS This Morning" whether she felt threatened by the message, Duncan said, "I did, and it's even hard to say that today". "My language was harsh and, despite the fact that all journalists receive harsh demands for fairness all the time, CBS did not like it".

Fager said he would not have thought that one note would have resulted in a dismissal after 36 years at the network, "but it did". Late previous year, former "CBS This Morning" host Charlie Rose was sacked after more than 2 dozen women accused him of sexual misconduct. In August, he denied the allegations, telling The New Yorker that his accusers were "using an important movement as a weapon", apparently referencing the "Me Too" movement.

Bloodworth Thomason doesn't mention the incident or the actress again, but the claim reinforces the sexual misconduct allegations Moonves is now facing and the pattern of behavior suggested in Ronan Farrow's New Yorker pieces.

It was shortly after outlets began to pick up the news of Fager's exit that he released a statement of his own, in light of CBS News' refusing to comment on his specific violation.

'Jeff Fager is leaving the company effective immediately, ' read a memo sent to CBS staff on Wednesday afternoon.

Fager said in a separate statement that the allegations in the New Yorker are "false" and that the decision by CBS was unrelated.

Meanwhile, Connecticut's Quinnipiac University, which presented Fager with its Fred Friendly journalism award earlier this year, said it has rescinded the honor. "Bill Owens, who has served as executive editor at 60 Minutes since 2008, will manage the team during the search for a replacement".

In two New Yorker articles, the latest posted on Saturday, some women described the "60 Minutes" culture as a boy's club that's rough on women.

He said Mr Fager had "violated company policy", without elaborating on how.

"When he grabbed my ass, it was just, like, 'Welcome to '60 Minutes.' You're one of us now", Johnasen told The New Yorker.
