Tennis Officials "Fearful They Could Be the Next Ramos" After Serena Incident

13 September, 2018, 08:28 | Author: Miranda Cannon
  • Umpire Carlos Ramos had to be escorted from the stadium as the home crowd grew increasingly partisan following Serena Williams defeat

The third code violation resulted in a game penalty for Williams.

So you can understand her anger at being accused of cheating, and now she was being punished for something she didn't even know was happening?

"So many people look up to Serena Wiliams, and she is an iconic figure".

She added: "There's no equality when it comes to what the men are doing to the chair umpires and what the women are doing, and I think there has to be some consistency across the board".

"She is passionate about what she does out there".

"The character was the biggest issue here". She did not stomp on her racket during the match as the cartoon portrayed.

"Carlos Ramos is one of the most experienced and respected umpires in tennis", the ITF statement said. But he said the controversy, along with others that occurred during the tournament, "opens an opportunity to bring greater clarity and hold a conversation with officials about how things could have been better handled in terms of our policies".

But the International Tennis Federation defended Ramos and said in a statement that his "decisions were in accordance with the relevant rules" and that he "acted at all times with professionalism and integrity". It exists, let's not beat around the bush about it. But, in this case, particularly through the WTA, this has not happened.

Andy Murray was on Ramos' wrong side at the 2016 Rio Olympics, getting a code violation for saying "stupid umpiring". "As an umpire you're supposed to keep the flow of the match going and he did just the opposite".

"You're stressing me out", Osaka quipped, somewhat sheepishly.

"No one was saying she was a good sport, if they are they're insane", added King, who won 12 Grand Slam singles titles.

No matter what your opinions are on the drama surrounding Osaka's win, everyone can agree that life is pretty sweet for her right now.

"But in her protests... she also got part of it wrong".

Under the terms of their contracts, umpires - who are employed by grand slams and men's and women's tours - are not allowed to speak out publicly.

Osaka became the first-ever Japanese-born Grand Slam champion on Sunday after her stunning defeat over the former World No.1. Ramos penalized her a game for verbal abuse, something virtually unheard of in such an important match.

She played incredible tennis; regardless of how Serena behaved, maybe Naomi Osaka would have won that match anyway.

But a retired judge has spoken more to the situation. "I don't see it's necessary really to debate that".
