Carolinas, Virginia start evacuations as Hurricane Florence looms

  • Alex Gilewicz buys supplies at The Home Depot on Monday Sept. 10 2018 in Wilmington N.C. Residents of Wilmington and Southeastern N.C. Florence rapidly strengthened into a potentially catastrophic hurricane on Monday as it closed in on North and South

The National Hurricane Center said "some strengthening" is expected during the next 36 hours, and it is "expected to be an extremely unsafe major hurricane through Thursday". Shortly before 2 p.m., Alert Carolina released a statement noting that until further notice, classes and operations would run as scheduled at the University.

An average hurricane season includes at least 12 named storms - which may be less powerful than full-fledged hurricanes - and six hurricanes, with three of those being major storms.

Henry McMaster (R) on Monday ordered a mandatory evacuation of the state's coastline ahead of Hurricane Florence's expected arrival on Thursday.

President Donald Trump has declared a state of emergency in Virginia as Hurricane Florence approaches. Its center will move between Bermuda and the Bahamas on Tuesday and Wednesday and approach the coast of SC or North Carolina on Thursday, the National Hurricane Center said.

"The federal government stands ready to assist", she said.

Florence is forecast to make landfall in North Carolina late Thursday as a major hurricane and subject the region to high winds and heavy rain.

Trump said the hurricane was "one of the worst storms to hit the East Coast in many years".

It was centered about 1,230 miles east-southeast of Cape Fear, North Carolina, and moving west at 13 mph.

Since reliable record-keeping began more than 150 years ago, North Carolina has been hit by only one Category 4 hurricane: Hazel, with 130 miles per hour winds, in 1954. She said it was built in 2009 in Buxton, North Carolina, up on a ridge, and made to withstand a hurricane.

The governor warned residents that Florence was gaining strength and that the winds would likely be higher than other recent hurricanes. "Florence has rapidly intensified into an extremely unsafe hurricane", Blake wrote Monday evening that top sustained winds would approach the 157 miles per hour (253 kph) threshold for a worst-case Category 5 scenario.

"Red, no-swimming flags are flying, and everyone must stay out of the water", Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson said. While Helene is forecast to slide out to sea away from land, Isaac is a very real threat in the Caribbean later this week, the hurricane center said.

"This hurricane has the potential to cause life-threatening storm surge, catastrophic wind damage and significant flooding when we expect it to make landfall between Thursday and Friday, and it may slow down inland and unload feet of water".

Up and down the densely populated coast, residents have been told to prepare, and not just for a possible direct blow. While the storm is expected to batter spanning the Southeast to the Mid-Atlantic region, it will likely have little to no impact on MA, forecasters say.
