  • Dallas police seek manslaughter warrant against officer who killed neighbor

Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was arrested on a manslaughter charge Sunday in the shooting death of Botham Jean.

Dallas police, almost 48 hours after the fact, finally identified the police officer who shot Botham Jean, a Harding graduate, in his apartment in Dallas Thursday night. The department said the investigation is ongoing and that no additional information was available.

Her bond was set at $300,000.

DPD's announcement came after an attorney representing Jean's family named Guyger, 30, as the off-duty cop who shot and killed Jean Thursday night. But Mr Merritt, flanked by members of the family and Mothers Against Police Brutality, said they want Ms Guyger "to be treated like every other citizen, and where there is evidence that they've committed a crime, that there's a warrant to be issued and an arrest to be made".

Another officer had been in a Pleasant Grove neighborhood looking for a woman who had a warrant out for her arrest. They didn't provide details. His family lawyer had said on Saturday that Guyger should be arrested swiftly. The officer, a five-year veteran, has been placed on administrative leave.

Thursday's shooting occurred after Guyger was returning home in uniform from a 12-hour shift, according to police.

Hall announced Friday that investigators were preparing a warrant for a manslaughter charge. Following the Dallas Police Department's "normal officer-involved shooting protocol", the Texas Rangers were brought in to conduct an independent investigation, officials said. The family recommended that Jean move there because they thought he would be safe there. She is white; he was black. Clark, 22, was fatally shot earlier this year by officers in the backyard of his grandparents' home in Sacramento, California.

Rumors suggested that Guyger knew Jean and the two were involved in a romantic relationship.

On September 6, 2018 at about 9:59 p.m., an off duty Dallas Police officer called police dispatch and said she was involved in a shooting at the apartments located at 1210 S. Lamar.

"Right now, there are more questions than we have answers".

Police have not released many specifics of the shooting, although they did say previously that they were testing Guyger for drugs and alcohol. Investigators haven't released the results of those tests.

Allison Jean, who has held government posts in St. Lucia, where she lives and where her son grew up, said her son's death "just feels like a nightmare".

Jean was from Saint Lucia, a small Caribbean island, according to his Facebook page. "Would she have reacted differently?"

Meanwhile, Jean's family held a vigil for him Saturday at Dallas West Church of Christ, FOX 4 reported.

Jean wasn't the first person shot by Guyger. In 2017, Guyger shot 47-year-old Uvaldo Perez, who had wrestled a Taser away from her. As officers on the scene tried to figure out who the woman was, the man in the back seat got out, defying orders to stay in the vehicle.

Amber Guyger, 30, who has been with the department for nearly five years, was not indicted in the 2017 shooting of the suspect who had taken her Taser from her during a struggle. It's unclear what the interaction was between them, but at some point she "fired her weapon, striking the victim", according to Hall.
