  • Rafael Nadal agrees with Serena Williams 'Now wins are more special'

While there was frustration for Nadal, victory for Del Potro saw the Argentinean return to a Grand Slam final for the first time in nine years when he memorably won the US Open aged 20, beating Nadal and Federer on the way.

Rafael Nadal gave and gave at this U.S. Open, spending 17 hours and 55 minutes pounding his 32-year-old knees on hard court and supplying two marathon blocks of entertainment before his body finally gave out. "As you can imagine, it's very hard for me to say goodbye before the match finished", Nadal said afterwards, the news outlet reports. I had an issue in the second or third match.

"I didn't know if I (would) be a tennis player again or not".

"I was close to quit this sport because I couldn't find a way to fix my wrist problems".

"I don't know what can happen in a couple of days or a couple of weeks". But it was not the day.

"I waited as much as I can".

It took Nishikori more than a quarter of an hour to get on the board on Friday, but, on a night when injury was the talking point, he pulled up dramatically mid-point in the ninth game, grabbing at his right leg, before holding to keep the set alive at 3-5.

Still, he retains the No. 1 ranking no matter if del Potro or Djokovic lifts the U.S. Open trophy Sunday.

"That's frustrating. Is tough for me".

"It is not an injury that tells you, 'three weeks off, you are back". I didn't expect to get in another grand slam final. "I'm sad for him".

"All my career everybody say that because of my style, I will have a short career". I still here. I still here because I love what I am doing'.

Del Potro continued to dominate on his first serves, winning 70 percent of them.

But this is the first time the two will have clashed in a major final with their last final meeting coming at the Shanghai Masters back in 2013.

The Wimbledon champion, who ended a two-year grand slam drought by winning at the All England Club, has now won 13 sets in a row in NY. Who could ask for anything more? And through it all the tendninits in his knees has periodically slowed him.

I didn't take any pleasure in watching Nadal go through the motions in that second set - especially in case he did more damage. The defending champion looked up at his guest box and indicated something was wrong.

"Of course it's not the best way to win a match", Del Potro said during his on-court interview.

"I thought in the important moments I came up with some good second serves, some good first serves". I did well in the tiebreak and I am so happy to be in the final once again.

This one, given the added difficulty created by unusually high heat and humidity, would certainly be meaningful. "I had my biggest memories on the tennis court playing on this court ... but I was a kid".
