Fan frenzy as Tiger and Rory share PGA Tour lead

  • Aronimink hosting the BMW Championship is ready for its close-up

Xander Schauffele vaulted into the halfway lead as Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods slipped back in the second round at the BMW Championship in Pennsylvania on Friday.

"This was the shot of the entire day, a three-iron from 230 (yards) and I just laced it up in the air", the 42-year-old said.

Schauffele has just two bogeys to 15 birdies on the week, and leads the field in putting through 36 holes.

Tiger Woods watches his tee shot on the third hole during the first round of the BMW Championship golf tournament at Aronimink GC.

Everything else felt that way Thursday in the BMW Championship, where Woods had his lowest score in an opening round in almost 20 years and his best score on the PGA Tour since his last victory more than five years ago.

Woods, who started his day on the 10th hole, sank five birdies in addition to an eagle at the par-5 16th to shoot a 29 on his first nine holes of the week. A day after making seven birdies and an eagle, he could manage just three birdies and added bogeys at the last two holes, including a three-putt on the 18th green.

This is the first time Woods has shared a PGA Tour lead after any round since capturing the 2013 WGC-Cadillac Championship.

The 14 time major champion wasted no time in electrifying another enormous gallery by reaching the turn in just 29 shots - the first time he has done that since the 2007 Tour Championship.

"It's been something I've been struggling with all year and it's been much better the last couple of weeks", he said.

For Woods, his 62 was the second best opening-round score he's ever recorded.

The 14-time major victor Woods and McIlroy have a one-stroke lead after both shot eight-under 62 which marked the American's best PGA first round since the 1999 Byron Nelson Classic.

Woods and McIlroy still had to hit the shots and make the putts.

"I made some great putts out there today including getting off to a better start than I have most of the season", he said. He holed an 8-foot birdie putt on No. 2, part of a run six straight birdies. "And I didn't capitalize".
