  • STORM UPDATE: Santa Rosa County public schools early release Tuesday - South Santa Rosa News

Parts of the Louisiana and MS coasts were under a hurricane warning early Tuesday after fast-developing Tropical Storm Gordon moved across South Florida on its way to the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters say they still expect Tropical Storm Gordon to become a hurricane before making landfall somewhere along or near the MS coast. The National Hurricane Center calls the storm "life threatening".

Coastal areas from the Florida Panhandle to Louisiana could experience 4-8 inches of rain, with isolated totals of 12 inches through late Thursday that could cause risky flash flooding and "life-threatening" storm surge, according to the hurricane center.

Though the Louisiana coast remained calm as of early Tuesday evening, Governor John Bel Edwards declared a state of emergency and companies cut 9 percent of U.S. Gulf of Mexico oil and gas production.

As Tropical Storm Gordon heads toward the MS coast, we asked if the storm will affect Fort Worth.

A storm surge warning is in effect from Shell Beach, Louisiana, to Dauphin Island, Alabama.

The Inn at Ocean Springs and The Roost Hotel in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, had guests planning to ride out the storm, said Kristin Smith, the general manager of both hotels.

As of the 11 a.m. update from the National Hurricane Center, winds in the storm are 75 miles per hour and it is moving WNW at 12 miles per hour. Florence's maximum sustained winds were 75 miles per hour as it moved to the west-northwest at 12 miles per hour. As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, Tropical Storm Gordon's center is 160 miles offshore with next-to-nothing impacts for Tampa Bay, despite wind speeds of up to 65 mph. "There is a non-tropical storm west of Gordon that is causing some of the wind shear", Sosnowski said.

Authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for areas outside the city's levee protection system, including the Venetian Isles, Lake Saint Catherine and Irish Bayou communities.

New Orleans government offices and Orleans Parish Schools are closed Tuesday.

Heavy rainfall from Gordon likely will affect an area from the Louisiana coast through the Florida Panhandle and inland along the storm's track, according to the hurricane center. Those outages are mostly in coastal Alabama and include the western tip of the Florida Panhandle around Pensacola, with a few hundred in southeastern Mississippi.

Forecasters are also keeping watch on Tropical Storm Florence in the central Atlantic.
