Ayanna Pressley’s Reaction To Her Historic Victory Is Everything

Boston City Councilor Ayanna Pressley on Tuesday scored a massive victory over a 10-term incumbent to win the Democratic nomination to represent the liberal city in the U.S. Congress and immediately came out swinging at President Donald Trump. She was the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council in 2009.

She is expected to coast to victory in November as there is no Republican on the ballot.

Brianna Wu is a co-founder of the video game company Giant Spacekat.

Pressley conceded throughout the race that there was little policy daylight between her and Capuano, though she did go further than him by calling for the abolishment of the Immigrations and Customs Enforcement agency.

The 63-year-old Lynch is a former union ironworker and grew up in South Boston.

Pressley acknowledged that she and Capuano would probably vote the same way on most issues, but she has argued that she could lead "a movement" from the seat.

Ayanna Pressley, 44, beat veteran politician Mike Capuano, 66, after mounting an insurgent campaign in MA 7th Congressional District.

But here was Ayanna Pressley, a Boston City Council member and rising Democratic star, exhorting volunteers in a Cambridge restaurant with an impassioned performance style she learned as a child at her grandfather's storefront Baptist church in Chicago.

Pressley was endorsed by fellow congressional upstart Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Pressley also represents the latest underdog candidate to have emerged to challenge both establishment Democrats and Republicans.

A survivor of sexual assault at Boston University and during her childhood, Pressley has been a vocal supporter of victims of sexual violence since long before the #MeToo movement.

Moments after her rival - 10-term Rep.

"The district wanted a lot of change", Capuano said as he conceded.

Pressley's win echoed that of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's over the long-time representative Joe Crowley in NY, and the ascent of Stacey Abrams in Georgia, who - if she wins - will become the first African-American female governor in USA history.

"I have been really furious about the constant charges being lobbed against me about identity politics that, by the way, are only lobbed against women and candidates of color", she said in one debate.
