Roger Federer stuns ‘showman’ Nick Kyrgios with shot of US Open 2018

The closest Kyrgios came at really bothering Federer and his quest of a sixth US Open crown was in the first set when Federer got out of a cage at 3-all, 0-40 to hold serve.

The second-seeded Swiss withstood an early onslaught from the unpredictable Aussie, firing 51 winners that included an unlikely forehand flicked around the net post that Kyrgios couldn't believe.

Roger Federer taunted Nick Kyrgios for his shot-making audacity after delivering a tennis masterclass to send the flashy Australian packing from the US Open in NY.

By the third set Kyrgios was running out of ideas as Federer kept up the pressure and broke Kyrgios for a 6-5 lead.

"He's not going to play as well as he did towards the end of the first set or into the second set".

"Clearly", Federer said, "when you play that way and you lose, it's always, like, you feel like he's so much to blame".

While Federer is usually all business and Kyrgios the showman, the roles were reversed midway through the third set on Saturday when the Swiss produced a trick shot that left the Australian wide-eyed and open mouthed.

When Kyriagos placed a drop shot, it nearly looked impossible for Federer who was close to his baseline. "When he gets in front, there's not much you can do".

First, though, both get what shape up as mismatches in the fourth round: Federer plays 55th-ranked John Millman, and Djokovic faces 68th-ranked Sousa.

Scarface: Out of this world Roger Federer...

After the loss, Kyrgios was asked what he could learn from the example the 37-year-old had set throughout his career. Zverev still has never made the fourth round in visits to NY after being beaten 6-7 (1), 6-4, 6-1, 6-3 by Philipp Kohlschreiber in an all-German matchup, while Joao Sousa defeated Pouille 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 7-6 (5).

Serena Williams' yells of "Come on!" were crescendoing right along with the tension in a fourth-round US Open match that began as a rout and suddenly became riveting.

Kyrgios stood, jaw agape, before walking toward the net to try to get Federer's attention, but the 20-time Grand Slam champion simply turned his back and smiled.

'I think we're two very different characters, ' he said.

Recalling her 2017 quarterfinal victory over Sevastova, which was decided by a third-set tiebreaker, Stephens said- "I had to dig really deep".

Thiem prevented a rematch of last year's U.S. Open final by eliminating 2017 runner-up and No. 5 seed Kevin Anderson 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (2).

Djokovic saved all five break points he faced to book a meeting with Joao Sousa of Portugal, a 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/5) victor over France's Lucas Pouille. But, he may need to step out of his comfort zone and play more aggressively if he wants to win this match.
