Phoenix Suns Add Versatility, Shooting in Surprising Trade With Houston

Houston will send Ryan Anderson and 2018 second-round pick De'Anthony Melton to Phoenix in exchange for Brandon Knight and Marquese Chriss, according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski. Houston has gotten rid of that contract and received a cheaper player in return in Chriss, who is still in the midst of his rookie deal and Knight, who is a bit cheaper than Anderson. It's a downgrade for Knight's fantasy outlook, as he goes from being a potential starter to fighting for minutes in one of the most talented backcourts in the league.
Brandon Knight missed all of the 2017 season with an ACL tear while playing basketball in Miami. In the 72 games he played with the Suns last season, Chriss averaged 7.7 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.0 blocks on 42.3 percent shooting from the field, and 29.5 percent from beyond the arc. Knight, a six-year National Basketball Association veteran, averaged 15.0 points and 3.8 assists in 117 games with the Suns after being acquired on February 19, 2015.
The move comes as a bit of a surprise with Anderson carrying two years and more than $41 million remaining on his contract. Melton, the No. 46 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft, is yet to sign a contract, and it remains questionable if he can earn a roster spot in Phoenix.
Chriss, the No. 8 overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, never saw his career blossom with the Suns.
The Rockets finished last season at 65-17, finishing first in the Western Conference and losing to the Warriors in the Western Conference finals. Knight and Chriss aren't guys who bring championship experience, and they don't fill the void on the wing left by Trevor Ariza and Luc Mbah a Moute.
In Phoenix, Melton could see more opportunities if the Suns move him to point guard. He can provide spacing for Devin Booker, Josh Jackson and Deandre Ayton with his ability to shoot from well beyond the 3-point line (39.6 percent on 6.1 3-point attempts per game the last two seasons). Chriss could play both center and power forward. The 30-year-old signed a four-year deal with the Rockets in 2016 worth $80 million.
