The sixth-seeded Djokovic, who won Wimbledon in July, has looked his dominant self in the first two rounds of the tournament and is searching for his 14th career Grand Slam title and third at the final major of the year in NY.

The 29-year-old, who was born in Brisbane and is now ranked 55th in the world, was up two sets to one against the Swiss juggernaut and prevailed in a gripping fourth-set tie-break to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. 7-6.

While Federer faces Australian John Millman in the last match on Arthur Ashe.

Closed poorly, too. And now he's gone, beaten at the US Open by an opponent ranked outside the top 50 for the first time in his career.

Federer started in typical fashion to take the opener 6-3 but Millman didn't wilt, taking the game up to the Swiss to win the next two 7-5, 7-6.

Nishikori could end up fighting for a semi-final berth against Croatian Marin Cilic, who beat him in the 2014 final.

No doubt, he would have expected Federer to advance in similar fashion against Grand Slam fourth-round debutant John Millman, but if Djokovic managed to "put the kids to sleep quickly" he will have watched on in amazement as the Aussie staged a remarkable comeback.

Tsurenko left the court for a health check after the first set and often leaned on her racket between points, saying later she felt dizzy at the Grandstand court, which doesn't offer shade the way the tournament's two bigger arenas do.

"I don't think she was struggling so much", Vondrousova said.

Djokovic fulfilled his role in setting up the mouthwatering last eight clash by beating Joao Sousa 6-3 6-4 6-3.

Through his opening round matches Djokovic and his play both suffered under a blazing sun and with temperatures once again nudging into the 90s Fahrenheit (32 Celsius), the extreme conditions took a toll on 31-year-old Serb.

Sousa, who totaled 21 winners to 28 unforced errors, has never taken a set off Djokovic in five career head-to-heads.

Sharapova won the 2006 title in NY, but she's now lost in the fourth round in her past three appearances.
