Andy Murray trolls Nick Kyrgios over umpire controversy, fans love it

  • Kyrgios triumphs over Herbert after umpire controversy

According to Earley, the official said he wanted to check whether Kyrgios needed medical attention and to warn the player that Lahyani "would need to take action" if the "seeming lack of interest in the match continued".

"I'm not sure it was encouragement".

"This just shows you how bad it was, that this guy, Mohamed Lahyani, felt he had the need to get off the chair - this is how little of an effort Kyrgios was making", McEnroe told ESPN. "I spend the least possible time here on site because that takes energy away", Zverev said. I don't care how fit you are, what you're used to, the humidity can really get to you.

"I want to help you".

During his second round encounter with Pierre-Hugues Herbert the Australian was down a set and 3-0 in the second set when umpire Mohamed Lahyani chose to give a little "pep talk" to the wildly erratic Aussie. "I've seen your matches: you're great for tennis ..."

"It's not the umpire's role to go down from the chair", he said after his match. "I had the plan to go to Dubai first, where it's extremely hot".

The second seeded Federer beat Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets in his opening match in Tuesday's evening session and spoke about how tough it has been to adjust to the weather this year.

A match against Kyrgios can either be the most cherished or terrifying thing to a tennis player.

As he posted a farewell message to NY on Instagram, Murray added: "I'm off to get a health check as apparently I've started imagining things".

Elsewhere, Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic and Maria Sharapova reached the third round but second seed Caroline Wozniacki was beaten by Lesia Tsurenko.

If Lahyani gets in trouble for his actions on Thursday, maybe he should consider moving from the umpire chair to Kyrgios' coach's box.

Croatian tennis payer Donna Vekic added: "Didn't know umpires were allowed to give pep talks".

Nick Kyrgios was struggling against Pierre-Hugues Herbert before a dramatic turnaround following a chat with the umpire. The faintest of whispers to a players box - if noticed by the umpire - will earn a warning and in all likeliness, a fine.

During a break in play, the umpire climbed down from his chair and approached the player, giving him what looked like a motivational speech.

"It's a conversation, and a conversation can change your mindset".

Later on Thursday, the U.S. Open put out a statement, explaining the interaction between Lahyani and Kyrgios. "I don't think he's a coach, he's an umpire". This is incredible because [for the first time] in 40 years I'm actually going to defend an umpire.

"I think we both really played on a really high level from the first point", said 2016 champion Kerber who had led by a set and 5-2 at one stage.

"Lahyani will continue to officiate during the 2018 US Open".

"He now has a better understanding of what our protocols are and was informed that he needs to stick to those protocols for the rest of the tournament", Widmaier said.

He then tweeted: "I shouldn't have tweeted so quickly after the match".
