Uhuru Leaves to Attend China-Africa Forum in Beijing

China is investing billions of dollars in aid and projects, making Africa the most focused destination under the BRI.

President Buhari will tomorrow meet Nigerians living in China before the kick-off of FOCAC on Monday when he will join President Jinping and other African leaders for roundtable sessions which will essentially discuss the report of FOCAC since the 2015 Johannesburg Summit, including the implementation of the "ten cooperation plans" adopted at the last meeting.

Ahead of the summit, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spelt out the four-point agenda for the 2018 Summit, hoisted as "a new historic monument" in Sino-Africa relations.

Nigeria president Muhammadu Buhari has arrived in China for the 7th Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (#FOCAC2018).

"The expected outcome of the summit will translate the strong willingness of both sides to deepen pragmatic cooperation into concrete action, and make comprehensive plans for the priority areas and key directions of China-Africa cooperation in the next three years and beyond, particularly those areas related to African people's livelihoods and employment and meeting the needs of African economic transformation and upgrading", Wang said.

African leaders and the chairman of the African Union (AU) will be in attendance, and the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General will be the esteemed guest, joined by 27 worldwide and African groups as observers.

The vision of the China-Africa relations is anchored on a desire for a shared future where all nations can prosper through cooperation and mutually beneficial partnerships.

BRI includes the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) over which India has protested to China as it traverses through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).


Dr Moyo is head of a delegation which was attending the Seventh Ministerial Conference of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (Focac) which ended here yesterday.

It is the most significant contributor to high debt risks in three African countries, Congo Republic, Djibouti, and Zambia, CARI said this week.

From 2000 to 2016, China loaned around $125 billion to the continent, data from the China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at Washington's Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies shows.

"Western media deliberately portray Africans in misery for collaborating with China and they appear to have discovered big news by finding occasional complaints in the African media about Sino-Africa cooperation", it said.

According to the World Bank, China has lifted more than 800 million people out of poverty since its economic opening up in 1990.

On a visit to Beijing in August, Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamed announced he was shelving a series of Chinese-backed infrastructure projects worth $22 billion in total.

At the last Africa-India Forum Summit, India had committed a concessional Line of Credit of United States dollars 10 billion and USD 600 million in grant assistance, Modi said.

"I am satisfied that everyday we are improving our competitiveness in the region and internationally in terms of attracting investment into the country to grow our economy, modernise our economy".
