"We are committed to protecting consumers online and to preserving the open Internet", the organization said in a statement.

State attorneys general and the District of Columbia asked a federal appeals court in August to reinstate the Obama regulations.

"SB822 sets the standard for other states to follow". As of now 30 total states have introduced bills to save net neutrality, as well as state governors in NY and Montana signing executive orders to ensure that communications providers must treat all data on the internet equally.

The FCC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Wednesday, the State Assembly passed a bill-the first of its kind in the USA -that would require such companies to change that.

The bill would become California's second major internet law passed in the last few months, The New York Times said.

The bill stops Internet service providers from blocking or slowing down certain websites or "classes of applications", like video.

Low, who heads the Assembly's LGBT caucus, said the bill would not harm freedom of speech or religion because it applies only to commercial practices or financial transactions. Brown hasn't taken a position on the bills. AT&T, which pushed hard against the California bill through its local lobbyists, has called for a national "Internet Bill of Rights" that would cover internet providers and online platforms alike, such as Google and Facebook.

California's laws have enormous influence across the country. The bill also tasks the state attorney general with evaluating potential evasion of the net neutrality rules on a case-by-case basis.

The law would face fierce resistance from telecommunications companies. Broadband-industry-backed groups such as CALinnovates and the Congress of California Seniors argued against it. He has not taken a public position on net neutrality. The EFF noted Verizon's recent throttling of internet to firefighters battling a blaze in Mendocino, saying that because the Open Internet order was repealed earlier this year, it could escape "meaningful" punishment for that.

Jonathan Spalter, the president and CEO of the industry group USTelecom spoke out against the legislation in a statement according to NBC.

Gov. Brown's office said he would not be commenting on SB 822. He has until the end of September.

The Post notes that the bill's goal is to make California the leader of the increasing backlash from states toward the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

California is taking net neutrality regulations into its own hands.

Pai viewed the rules as burdensome.

The measure would affect 377 of California's largest publicly traded companies, plus many smaller businesses. It would become the fourth state to enact new rules.
