Ms McClure set up the GoFundMe fundraiser page as a way to give back to Mr Bobbitt, and it raised more than $400,000 in funds donated by more than 15,000 people.

According to CNN affiliates WPVI and KYW, McClure and Mark D'Amico had the money they raised on GoFundMe in their personal accounts, Bobbitt's lawyer said.

The couple denies allegations of mismanagement, saying they were reluctant to give Bobbitt such a large sum of money out of fear he would buy drugs.

Johnny Bobbitt became a viral sensation in October a year ago when he used his last $20 to buy petrol for Kate McClure, who was stranded after running out of fuel on a motorway exit ramp near Philadelphia. Ultimately, the campaign raised more than $402,000 from more than 14,000 donors. "He didn't have any ability to take care of himself there".

During an appearance on United States television on Monday, D'Amico revealed there is well over $150,000 left of the donations.

Attorneys for a homeless veteran filed a lawsuit Wednesday against a New Jersey couple who managed a viral GoFundMe page that raised almost $403,000 to get the man off the streets.

Officials say the couple had mixed the GoFundMe money with their own. When McClure ran out of gas, Bobbitt, who. He told The Inquirer the $AU34,000 given to him by the couple in December was given to family members, and a "small amount" was spent on drugs. Appearing on television this week, D'Amico told Kelly: "Every dollar [Bobbitt] ever touched was used for drugs". A hearing is scheduled Thursday, Aug. 30, 2018.

But the relationship has since gone sour.

"My clients tried to help [Bobbitt]", Badway said in court Thursday. "It's going to come down to a demonstration of all the money and where the money went".

In April, six months after his fateful meeting with McClure, Bobbitt told the Inquirer that he had been clean for three weeks and jobless for much longer.

Bobbitt's attorneys are working with him pro bono, at least on a "short term", Fallon said.

The couple also say they bought Mr Bobbitt a camper with some of the funds and parked it on land owned by Ms McClure's family in Florence Township, New Jersey.

The judge said they have to place the money in an escrow account through their attorney, and provide the court with accounting information regarding all of the money they raised. She did not have money to repay him at the time, but sought him out days later to give him the money, and visited him a few more times to bring food and water.

McClure said on the GoFundMe page that the money would be used to buy Bobbitt a house and truck, and the rest would be placed in two trusts-one that would let him "collect a small "salary" each year" and another for his retirement. And within 13 days, D'Amico said on "Megyn Kelly Today", Bobbitt had blown through it.
