The number of sexually transmitted diseases continues to rise in the U.S.

Almost 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis were diagnosed in the United States in 2017, said the Centers CDC. 45 percent of those cases involved females from 15-24.

The total surpassed the previous record in 2016 by more than 200,000 cases and marked a larger trend of "sharp increases" in these STDs since 2013.

"We are sliding backward", said Jonathan Mermin, M.D., M.P.H, director of CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention.

PREVENTION TREATMENT. This trio of STDs can lead to infertility, stillbirths, ectopic pregnancies, and a host of other conditions if left untreated.

Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (MSM) made up nearly 70 percent of primary and secondary syphilis cases where the gender of the sex partner is known in 2017.

Gonorrhoea infections also surged by 18%, while chlamydia case were up 6% within the last 12 months.

There are concerns that the rise in syphilis might be linked to the opioid epidemic, with David Harvey from the National Coalition of STD Directors theorising that the numbers could be the result of women exchanging sex for drugs.

And yet we all but ignore these critical health components when we talk about, plan for, and pay for health. That's up from 1 percent in 2013.

"If we're not teaching people how to keep themselves safe from sexually transmitted infections early, then we start to see these surges and increases in those rates", Rauch said. "If our representatives are serious about protecting American lives, they will provide adequate funding to address this crisis". But he also said providers and patients played a significant role as "doctors are not screening and testing for STDs and patients don't know they need to ask for screening and treatment". However, gonorrhea has become resistant to all but one of them, and experts fear it's only a matter of time before even that one is no longer effective.
