Trump Brushes Off Criticism from Adm. McRaven: 'Don't Know Him'

According to former acting Central Intelligence Agency director Michael Morell, Gates was out of cell range when the letter was originally released, but he's an "important voice".

"I know that I've gotten tremendous response from having done that because security clearances are very important to me - very, very important", Trump said in a brief session with reporters on the White House lawn.

"Any access granted to our nation's secrets should be in furtherance of national not personal interest - for this reason I've also begun to review the more general question of the access to classified information by government officials", stated Press Secretary Sarah Sanders.

In another pushback against the president, retired Navy Admiral William McRaven, who oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden, praised Brennan and asked Trump to revoke his security clearance as well, writing in a Washington Post opinion piece that he would "consider it an honor". At a summit in Finland last month, Trump drew criticism and outrage when he told reporters he accepted Putin's denial that Russian Federation had intervened in the 2016 presidential election - a stance in direct conflict with the USA intelligence community's position.

In a statement, ex-CIA bosses appointed by Republican and Democratic presidents - including Robert Gates, George Tenet, Porter Goss, Leon Panetta and David Petraeus - denounced Trump's decision to strip Brennan of his security clearance.

"So, I think it's something that had to be done", Trump said of taking away Brennan's clearance.

"For him to be in the Justice Department, and to be doing what he did, that is a disgrace", Trump said. "Bruce Ohr is a disgrace".

Webb argued that Brennan does not require a security clearance to go on television and wage a "partisan battle" against Trump and he is still empowered to say what he pleases. But they noted the power play also could be used to reinforce a case alleging obstruction of justice, following the president's firing of former FBI Director James Comey and his repeated tweets calling for the investigation to end. A good leader sets the example for others to follow.

"Mr. Mueller is highly conflicted". He added, "So I think it's something that had to be done".

He wrote in Thursday's New York Times that Trump "clearly has become more desperate to protect himself and those close to him. We did nothing. There's no collusion".

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal on Wednesday night, Trump called the move against Brennan "something that had to be done" because officials on the list "led" the "rigged witch hunt" Russian Federation investigation.
