Police mobilises hundreds of officers as anti-fascist activists rally peacefully in downtown Charlottesville, Virginia to mark the anniversary of last summer's white supremacist violence.

"We must come together as a nation", Trump wrote on Twitter from his golf club in New Jersey. But, he added, "The state police is fully prepared to act on any inciteful violence". Peace to ALL Americans!'

Trump's tweet Saturday, his first public mention of the anniversary, did not label the event as a white supremacist rally or specify that it was a white rallygoer who rammed his auto into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing one.

"We want to claim our streets back, claim our public space back, claim our city back", Aheron said at the park.

Crowds of white supremacists and counterprotesters clashed before a auto plowed into a crowd, killing 32-year-old counterprotester Heather Heyer.

A state police helicopter later crashed, killing Lt. Jay Cullen and Trooper-Pilot Berke Bates.

Jason Kessler, a white supremacist from Charlottesville who organized last year's Unite the Right rally, and has organized the Washington rally, said list of speakers on his official permit was not accurate.

This time, supporters plan to gather in a much more high-profile setting: Lafayette Square park, directly across the street from the White House.

"I don't know exactly what will happen, but it probably will not be good", tweeted Richard Spencer, a leader of the so-called "alt-right" movement, who said he would be staying away from the rally.

On that day, white supremacists and counterprotesters clashed in the city streets before a auto driven into a crowd struck and killed 32-year-old Heather Heyer.

The counterprotesters included Paul Mitchell, a 62-year-old retired U.S. Parks Police sergeant who held a hand-painted sign that read "No Nazis, no KKK, no racists, no way".

Donald Trump sparked outrage last year by repeatedly condemning "both sides" for the violence last year in Charlottesville.

An independent investigation of last year's rally violence found the chaos stemmed from a passive response by law enforcement and poor preparation and coordination between state and city police.

Heyer was killed on August 12, 2017, when a neo-Nazi who had attended the "Unite the Right" rally earlier in the day rammed his auto into a group of protesters she was walking with.

A protester confronts riot gear-clad police on the campus of the University of Virginia during a rally to mark the anniversary of last year's Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville, Va., Saturday, Aug. 11, 2018.

"There is a beloved community here, but it's been broken the previous year", Kathy Spaar said. "There is no city better equipped to handle large-scale events, including First Amendment events, than Washington D.C.", Police Chief Peter Newsham told reporters. The rally was planned by white nationalists across the country, with the stated reason being to protest the removal of a confederate monument.

Critics have said the university was unprepared and didn't do enough to intervene during the clashes, which left several people injured.
