Vice President Mike Pence announced that the newest branch of the military (and also a awful name for a Sci-Fi TV show), Space Force, would be created by 2020.
"And in the realm of outer space, the United States Space Force will be that strength in the years ahead", Pence said.
Pence said an independent Space Force was essential to counter Russian Federation and China, which are "aggressively" working toward anti-satellite capabilities.
The U.S. intelligence agencies reported earlier this year that Russian Federation and China are pursuing "non-destructive and destructive" anti-satellite weapons for use during a future war.
Trump 2020 re-election campaign manager Brad Parscale emailed supporters on Tuesday asking them to vote on a Space Force logo which will be sold later on. "Under President Trump's leadership, we will meet it head on - to defend our nation, and build a peaceful future here on Earth and in space".
THE GOAL. According to Pence, "It is not enough to have an American presence in space".
The U.S. Air Force Space Command already handles the country's security and surveillance in space.
Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has endorsed steps to reorganize the military's space war-fighting forces and create a new command, but has previously opposed launching a pricey, new service.
The Trump administration aims to have the Space Force up and running by 2020, Pence said.
Pence announced that the Defense Department will be releasing a report outlining the first stages to "implement the president's guidance and turn his vision into a reality".
Defense One, a news outlet focused on the military, recently reported that the combatant command would be led by a four-star general and that there would also be an agency focused on buying satellites, citing a draft copy of a report due to Congress soon.
Pence pointed to Russia's development of airborne lasers to disrupt space-based systems and China's successful demonstration of how a missile can track and destroy satellites.
A 15-page Pentagon report released shortly after Pence spoke explained that the Department of Defense would "usher in a new age of space technology" and "deter, and if necessary degrade, deny, disrupt, destroy, and manipulate adversary capabilities to protect US interests, assets, and way of life". Except Mars has nothing to do with Trump's proposed Space Force and none of them are as fun as the ones that Bloomberg came up with.
"Peace only comes through strength", Pence said.
Late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel posted a Space Force recruitment video that aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live along with the message, "Enlist in the #SpaceForce NOW!"
Establishing a new military service geared at space would be a massive undertaking and require action from Congress both to establish the service and provide funding.
