Boris Johnson faces investigation over Burka comments

Mrs May said: 'I do think that we all have to be very careful about the language and terms we use.

100 British Muslim women who wear a burka or niqab have written to Conservative chair Brandon Lewis, demanding Boris Johnson be kicked out of the party.

Last June, the ethnonationalist and ethnopluralist far-right group, Generation Identity, carried out a "ban the burqa" protest in England, Northern Ireland, and Ireland.

A spokesman for the party declined to confirm the investigation. May acknowledged that Johnson's comments had "clearly caused offence".

The letter, seen exclusively by Sky News, says an apology would be "insufficient" and that Mr Johnson made a "deliberate choice" to "inflame tensions in a way that makes it easier for bigots to justify hate crime against us".

In a newspaper column, Johnson said women who wear the niqab looked like "letter boxes" and "bank robbers".

Her mother responded to her daughter's remarks by adding, "I can't even understand what she's saying coz her face is covered".

"We are not bound by collective responsibility or that type of discipline and it is the wrong approach to party discipline".

David Lammy, a member of the opposition Labour Party, called Johnson a dime-store version of President Trump and said he was "fanning the flames of Islamophobia" for political gain.

Ms Faifi, who wears niqab, a veil which leaves the eyes uncovered, said she could "empathise" with people who find it hard to connect with women whose full faces they cannot see.

"It may make good journalism, but it doesn't make a good member of parliament or a good minister".

It said Islamophobia was "heavily gendered" with white men carrying out nearly three quarters of verified incidents past year, while Muslim women made up more than half of victims.

As chairman of a party that seeks to represent the whole country, which protects individual liberty as a cherished British value, your call - we believe - is insufficient.

Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Tory leader, also tore into him for "gratuitously offensive" comments claiming women in burkas looked like letterboxes and bank robbers.

After quitting his cabinet post, the flamboyant former mayor of London took up his pen again as a paid opinion writer for the Daily Telegraph.

Taking to Twitter, the Jaanan actress emphasized a woman's right to wear whatever she feels comfortable in.
