  • Moto Z3 debuts with fingerprint scanner on the side, 5G mod - GSMArena.com news

Back in early June, Lenovo-owned Motorola unveiled the Moto Z3 Play. Moto Mods haven't quite take off the way Motorola presumably would have hoped, though the company says the usage stats among consumers who buy them has been steady. The smartphone doesn't yet have a United Kingdom release date or price, but it will be hitting USA stores from 16 August.

Having said that, under the hood, the Moto Z3 comes with Snapdragon 835 SoC which is last year's flagship chip. However, the cool thing about Moto Z3 is that it is super thin and that it sells for the somewhat affordable price of $460.

The Mod will initially work only with the Z3, although Moto said it's working on making it compatible with earlier generations of Verizon Moto Z phones.

There are no firm details about the possible United Kingdom pricing of the Z3 around at the moment. Finally, the smartphone is based on Android 8.1 Oreo with the stock interface and the device will receive Android P update in the near future.

As we've already said, the Z3 Force will be released in the United States in two weeks' time on 16 August.

The 5G Moto Mod is the real game-changer though.

Well for a start, it's not the most high-powered or flashy smartphone around. We will have a full review of the phone by then, although the Mod isn't coming out until next year. At 156g, it weighs 13g more too. Surprisingly, the Z3 is powered by Qualcomm's yesteryear flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 835 instead of the latest 845.

The smartphone is equipped with a dual rear camera that includes a 12-megapixel primary sensor with f / 2.0 aperture and a 12-megapixel monochrome sensor, combined with a dual LED flash. All in all, then, there's not a whole lot to differentiate it from the Z2 Force. It is the first 5G-upgradeable smartphone on the market, and will allow users to access Verizon's 5G network by snapping on the 5G moto mod. However, this 5G Moto Mod will only be available in the USA, that too exclusively on Verizon.

The bleeding-edge 5G Mod will connect to Verizon's millimeter-wave 5G network using four Qualcomm antenna arrays on different sides of the device. Not just the phone, company has also announced a 5G mod. To complete the set-up there is an 8MP front face lens for shooting selfies. In fact, it's really just like a Moto Z3 Play but with better internals. The dimensions are the same, the screen size is the same and the body is glass and metal. Still, it would've been nice to have had a bit of a flourish so we could tell the two apart.
