World No. 79 Paul Dunne is one of the first-timers heading to Akron to contest this week's WGC-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club.

After a family holiday in the Swiss Alps, Tiger Woods returns to competition seeking to climb to the summit of a ninth victory in what will this week be the last staging of the WGC - Bridgestone Invitational.

"Early part of the summer, [I realized] if I played well, this is what I was going to have to endure, coming with a pretty big schedule at the very end", said Woods, who returned this year after his fourth back surgery. He has won it eight times, a PGA Tour record for most victories on the same golf course.

Woods has made an incredible $10 million in earnings at Firestone over the years and has eight wins on the course - and while the 42-year-old hasn't won a tournament since 2013, he's off to a brilliant start on Thursday.

On Wednesday, Tiger told reporters the straight-forward course at Firestone, which is rare on the tour, will remain a special place to him.

McIlroy, who has a further four top-10 finishes to his name at the event, is among the players to watch having finished joint second at The Open. Woods last played at a WGC in this very tournament in 2014 but pulled out before completing it.

Asked about playing in the Ryder Cup the following week, Woods said he'd have no problem playing two matches in a day if asked.

"I've got to manage that and really make sure I take it easy in my practice sessions and make sure I'm ready for the tournament rounds". "I've never been in this position before, and so I'll have to get on my game and play well these last couple of weeks". "The first two times that I played at Firestone, I was not consistent with my ball control but now, I can move the ball around and can go for certain shots".

"I was kind of laughing because most of the media at the time were sceptical of my game plan and it played myself right into the lead".

"As I said, it was going to sting for a while, and it certainly does because I had a great chance at it", he said. "Within a year to get to 50 its quite an accomplishment".

"I just feel like this week is an ideal time to work on a few things [ahead of next week's US PGA Championship]". In December, Woods was ranked No. 1,199 in the world. There are also plenty of really good players who are in the middle tier range relative to the field like Zach Johnson, Adam Scott, and last years victor Hideki Matsuyama.
