HOT PLUME Roasting air engulfing Spain and France is causing temperatures to soar

A heat wave that killed three people in Spain threatens record-high temperatures in Europe this weekend.

Sixteen weather stations in Portugal registered record temperatures on Friday with Alcácer do Sal, near Setúbal, climbing to 45.9C (114.6F). The day's hottest temperature of 46.8 C (116.2 F) was recorded at Alvega in the center of Portugal. Highs are expected to reach record-breaking temperatures in inland areas this weekend.

Temperatures were being driven higher across the Iberian peninsula by a hot air mass moving northward from Africa, which is also bringing dust from the Sahara Desert, meteorologists said.

Spain's hottest temperature in the heat wave so far was 112 degrees on Friday in Badajoz, Etremadura, CNN forecasters said.

"The result of the hot summer will be a very big loss of snow and ice in the mountains", Professor of Geography Gunhild Ninis Rosqvist is quoted by the university as saying.

Portugal's Civil Protection Agency has been sending mobile text alerts warning of extreme fire risk in some areas, as they seek to avert casualties.

Another forest fire, in central Estremoz, has left six people wounded, two in serious condition.

In another sign of drought, water levels in the Danube River in Budapest are about to fall to a level that will expose a small outcrop called Dearth Rock that is nearly always underwater, the National Water Management Authority said.

48 degrees Celsius is the current record, set in the Greek capital Athens back in 1977.

Combined with high pressure in charge, blue skies every day, and the ground already warmed up, that leads to a day-on-day build, combining to produce these intense temperatures.

With temperatures set to hit at least 46C in Portugal and Spain this weekend, British holidaymakers have been flocking to water parks and embracing the siesta as local emergency services warned they have seen a surge in fainting tourists.

Sunday will be warm and dry in most places with sunny spells.

Temperatures as high as 32C (90F) are possible around London on Monday and Tuesday.

In July, the Scandinavian country witnessed record temperatures and wildfires that extended into the Arctic Circle.

The news arrives on the heels of a heatwave which has hit all over Europe and the United Kingdom, with exceedingly high temperatures expected across the continent for the coming week.
