Maduro, who was unharmed, was speaking at a celebration of the 81st anniversary of the National Guard, when detonations from "various drones" near the presidential area and along the parade route occurred, Jorge Rodriguez, the Venezuelan Minister of Communication and Information, said on Venezuelan state television.

Drones loaded with explosives have detonated close to a military event in Caracas where Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was giving a speech.

A video shows Ms Flores wince and look up after a sound. Soldiers at the military parade were then seen running away from an unconfirmed occurrence before the transmission was cut.

"This was an assassination attempt, they tried to assassinate me", Maduro said in a later televised address. Maduro has steadily moved to concentrate power as the nation reels from a crippling economic crisis.

In a tweet, the president of Venezuela's National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, called the incident at the military parade a "terrorist attack against the president and the high military command blaming the opposition for the violence".

However, some media reports say the government's version of the events are not true.

David Smilde, a senior fellow at the Washington Office on Latin America who has spent decades researching Venezuela, said the incident did not appear to be a staged attack by Maduro's government for political gain. "The hour of the economy recovery has come".

However, seven members of the Venzuelan national guard were injured and are being treated, Mr Rodriguez said.

Witnesses said the Venezuelan president was apparently attacked by several explosive laden drones on Saturday. Perez was hunted down and killed by Venezuelan forces.

"I have no doubt that everything points to the right, to the Venezuelan far-right in alliance with the Colombian far-right and that the name Juan Manuel Santos (Colombian president) is behind this attempt, I have no doubt". "We didn't have success today, but it's just a question of time", it said. "After losing the vote, they failed again", BBC quoted him as saying. "I am sure I will live for many more years".
