The clavicle and teeth offer some of the best comparison to the personnel file the Department of Defense keeps of missing servicemen, said Cole, author of the book "POW/MIA Accounting: Searching for America's Missing Servicemen in the Soviet Union". The laboratory uses forensic anthropology, odontology, DNA and other scientific methods to identify remains.

While the fighting in the Korean War lasted from 1950 until 1953, the war never formally ended because a treaty was never signed, though an armistice was struck dividing the peninsula in two. "They are likely to be American remains".

Trump also took to Twitter earlier to praise an "incredibly handsome ceremony" in Hawaii, where Vice President Mike Pence helped welcome the remains to the United States. The official did not know details about the single dog tag, including the name on it or whether it was even that of an American military member.

"The remains received from North Korea are being handled with the utmost care and respect by professional historians, forensic scientists, uniformed personnel and government officials", the USA -led U.N. Command said in a statement.

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence speaks at a Wednesday ceremony in Hawaii, to receive the alleged remains of U.S. servicemen killed in the Korean War.

The identification process could take several years depending on the condition of the remains, Reuters reported.

US President Donald Trump maintains that talks with North Korea are progressing smoothly, following his meeting with the North's leader Kim Jong Un.

Indonesia has invited North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to attend the opening ceremony of the Asian Games in Jakarta in August, following a similar invitation to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, officials said.

Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has said some remains could turn out to be those of missing from other nations.

That meeting in Singapore included an agreement for a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula but lacked any concrete timetable or means for how it would occur.

North Korea prepares new missiles, still working on advanced weapons in a factory that developed the first intercontinental ballistic missiles of the country able to reach the United States, as indicated by officials familiar with the intelligence.

Members of the U.S. military carried 55 boxes draped with American flags off C-17 aircraft and into a hangar at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. A USA military plane made a rare trip into North Korea to retrieve the 55 cases.

Dignitaries from the 16 countries that fought under the United Nations banner during the 1950-1953 conflict laid wreaths to honor the fallen soldiers, which were given a 21-gun salute by US riflemen. A bugler played "Taps", ending the ceremony. An aerial salute known as the "missing man formation" was conducted by F-16s before the remains were loaded on a pair of cargo planes.

The repatriation is a breakthrough in a long-stalled USA effort to obtain war remains from North Korea. And as I said to them, my father, anytime the war came up and anyone used the word "hero, ' my dad would say, the heroes were the ones that didn't come home", Pence said.

Adam Mount, a senior fellow and director at the Federation of American Scientists, agreed that these steps "are encouraging and helpful for extending talks" but noted they "are not themselves a major material step toward disarmament or militarily significant restrictions". Maharani also discussed North and South Korea relations during the visit, as well as regional issues and the performance of Indonesia's police in countering militancy. "Again, this is a great first step in building some confidence and a relationship".

In exchange for returning the US war dead, North Korea may demand that the United States agree on a declaration to end the Korean War as a USA security guarantee.
