White House chief of staff John Kelly is expected to stay on through 2020, a senior administration official confirms to CBS News.

For months, rumors swirled in Washington about Mr. Kelly falling out of favor with the president, suffering a deteriorating role in the White House and looking to the exit.

Kelly began as chief of staff in late July previous year, taking over for Reince Priebus.

The image belied a fraught relationship between Trump and Kelly, who has been credited with restoring a semblance of order to the chaotic West Wing - but at the cost of grating on the freewheeling commander-in-chief.

While serving as secretary of homeland security, Kelly got news of his promotion via tweet from Air Force One.

Trump has reportedly considered replacing Kelly with Nick Ayers, Vice President Mike Pence's longtime aide and chief of staff, and Mick Mulvaney, the Office of Management and Budget chief who also serves as acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Trump asked Kelly to stay on through 2020 election, the Wall Street Journal reported, and Kelly accepted. With Kelly as perhaps the president's closest advisor and enforcer, the administration has been able to achieve numerous coordinated policy priorities ranging from tax reform to foreign summits, from the complex trade concessions to managing various crises at and within our borders.

Trump and Kelly have privately argued at times and complained about one another to confidants. Every few months, reports re-emerge about Kelly's dissatisfaction with his job and potential resignation.

He writes: "Congratulations to General John Kelly".

Kelly has often joked publicly about how working for Trump is the hardest job he's ever had, including those on the battlefield.

Asked in June about the speculation surrounding Kelly's future, Trump said the two were "getting along very well".
