  • Do's and Don'ts: WI sales tax holiday

As back to school shopping starts up, state sales tax is dropping off some items.

Clothing items up to $75 each and school supplies or instructional materials up to $20 each will be free of taxes if purchased during this weekend.

The sales tax weekend ended at 11:59pm Sunday.

According to the Department of Revenue, items that will be sales tax-free include school supplies, clothing and computers and computer supplies.

Retailers can not collect sales or use tax during the days on qualifying items.

You wonder whether North Carolina will have its own tax-free holiday weekend?

"It seems like more people are aware of it this year than before", said Burger.

State Rep. Paula Davis, R-Baton Rouge, who authored Act 1 from the third Special Session of the year, said the sales tax holidays weren't discussed in the debate on her bill "because it was already a dead issue". Examples include, but are not limited to, bathing suits, belts, boots, coats and jackets, costumes, diapers, formal wear, gloves and mittens, hats, insoles for shoes, neckties, rainwear, scarves, socks, uniforms and wedding apparel.

According to the tax policy nonprofit Tax Foundation, which considers tax holidays political gimmicks that distract from potentially more useful tax relief, the number of states holding the holidays peaked at 19 in 2010. That's because shoppers went shopping over the weekend in droves.

It's also a good time to get items tax-free for storm and emergency preparedness.

"School supplies" does not include any item purchased for use in a trade or business.

"School supplies" - any item normally used by students in a standard classroom for educational purposes, including but not limited to, textbooks, notebooks, paper, writing instruments, crayons, art supplies, rulers, book bags, backpacks, handheld calculators, graphing calculators, chalk, maps and globes.
