Kohli keeps India in test

  • Joe Root added that his side wants to make a serious impact against the world’s number one ranked side

Indian skipper Virat Kohli's 225-ball 149 on day two ensured that the team stays in hunt in the first Test against England in Edgbaston.

England captain Joe Root struck his 41st half-century and put on 105 runs with Jonny Bairstow.

It took Virat Kohli one innings - or 172 deliveries, to be exact - of the ongoing India vs England Test series to make a statement.

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami says his love for cricket helped him battle the off-field problems that pegged him back a few months ago as he made an impressive comeback in the ongoing first Test against England at Edgbaston. The wicket of Alastair Cook in the last over of the day means no other batsman will have to come out to bat today.

It was the second time in the match that Ashwin had dismissed Cook, England's all-time leading Test run-scorer, in such a manner. Kohli rubbed salt into the wound by blowing kisses in the direction of Root and putting his finger to his lips.

Ravichandran Ashwin shone for India, taking four wickets for 60 runs from his 25 overs.

Root's side won the one-day global series between the teams 2-1 and lost the Twenty 20 competition by the same margin earlier this month.

But the introduction of Curran turned the tables in favour of the hosts as he dismissed India's top three batsmen in the space of nine runs.

"Personally, it was obviously a pretty special day for me with the ball", said Curran.

Cook fell to a wonderful piece of bowling by Ravi Ashwin, India's only spinner here but brought into the attack for just the seventh over.

It was a miserable passage of play for England in the hour after tea, on a day when they had long seemed sure to vindicate Root's decision to bat first on a pitch of even pace and true bounce.

India, 76 for three at lunch, lost their next two wickets on 100 with Ajinkya Rahane (15) caught in the slips off Stokes before the all-rounder bowled Dinesh Karthik for a duck. Kohli didn't open his account then.

AFTERNOON SESSION (India 160-6, England 287): What a session that was, it was Test cricket at its best - high drama, tension and sporting intensity.

"It is an opportunity missed", Jennings said of England's batting display.
