Eight states are filing suit against the Trump administration over its decision to allow a Texas company to publish downloadable blueprints for a 3D-printed gun, contending the hard-to-trace plastic weapons are a boon to terrorists and criminals, and threaten public safety.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told reporters on Tuesday: "It is now illegal to own or make a wholly plastic gun of any kind - including those made on a 3D printer".

The age of the 3D-printed gun will have to wait at least another month, after a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing a Texas company from releasing blueprints on their website Wednesday morning.

3-D printed guns are functional weapons that are often unrecognizable by standard metal detectors because they are made out of materials other than metal (e.g., plastic) and untraceable because they contain no serial numbers.

3D printers have become much more accessible and that's made it easier to make these guns.

Gun control advocates say downloadable guns undermine laws that block unsafe people from accessing firearms.

"After yesterday's order, federal firearm import and export laws once again prohibit the distribution of these downloadable gun files", said Bob Ferguson, Washington state's attorney general, who won the order on behalf of the states.

The company's website had said downloads would begin today, but blueprints for "the Liberator", a single-shot.380-caliber plastic pistol has been posted on the site since Friday. They're seeking to block the federal government's settlement with the company that makes the plans available online.

Shkop said 3D printing is part of the future of gun manufacturing.

The self-proclaimed "crypto-anarchist" also made the digital blueprints available online on Tuesday, a day earlier than the launch date he had previously announced. Wilson has argued that the instructions are protected under the First and Second Amendments.

Eric Soskin, a lawyer for the U.S. State Department, told the judge on Tuesday that the government's role in the case was that of a bystander.

"I am looking into 3-D Plastic Guns being sold to the public", he said. "And not just any firearms, untraceable firearm", Menendez said. Models for the AR-15, the second-most popular firearm, had been downloaded more than 3,000 times.

Cody Wilson, the founder of Defense Distributed, tweeted that he has filed lawsuits to dismiss the challenges in New Jersey, Los Angeles and Washington state.

When filing the lawsuit on Monday, AG Ferguson asked the court for an emergency restraining order "to avoid immediate and irreparable harm to the States and the nation".

The Trump administration previously ruled to allow Wilson and Defense Distributed to publish the blueprints.

The restraining order puts that plan on hold for now.

Some gun rights groups point out laws allow people to make their own guns now and say this isn't all that different.
