Donald Trump says he'll meet with Iran 'anytime they want to'

  • Trump Says He’s Willing to Meet With Iranian President With ‘No Preconditions’

Head of Iran's Strategic Council on Foreign Relations, Kamal Kharazi, said Tehran saw no value in U.S. President, Donald Trump's offer to meet Iranian president for talks without preconditions.

Mr Trump said he could meet President Hassan Rouhani with "no preconditions" at "any time", after the two traded hostile threats earlier this month.

A US official reportedly communicated to Israel that there had been no change in the US' Iran policy, notwithstanding Trump's offer to negotiate with Tehran without any "preconditions".

Israel, which opposed the nuclear deal and encouraged Trump to withdraw from it, seems not concerned with the USA offer to meet Iranian leaders.

"Any little thing that can help the people in this bad situation, I really want it to happen for us", said Fathi, a young woman working for an insurance broker.

"I'd meet with anybody".

As part of that effort, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on July 22 compared Iran's leaders to a "mafia" and promised unspecified backing for Iranians unhappy with their government.

Rouhani says, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has never sought tension in the region and is not seeking to cause any problem in the worldwide waterways, however we will never abandon our right to export oil".

Iran is less isolated than North Korea and less amenable to a media spectacle that doesn't restore the benefits Iran lost. Back then, all 20 countries that were importing Iranian crude received waivers from the sanctions, in exchange for gradually reducing the imports.

"It is hard to see the Iranians... being agreeable to such a meeting with someone who only a few weeks ago basically sank an agreement with which they were so pleased".

In his first public remarks after Trump's comment, President Rouhani did not mention Trump at all but instead stressed the need for the other nations involved in the nuclear deal to forge ahead with their pledges of trying to salvage it.

Trump elicited Iran's furor in May when he unilaterally pulled the USA out of the 2015 nuclear accord the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany struck with Iran.

It seems, however, that neither Iran nor Trump's own administration is keen on the idea.

After leaving the deal, the Trump White House has moved to reinstate sanctions on Tehran in two major tranches. European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini, who chaired the meeting, announced that Iran and the remaining parties had agreed to continue negotiations, including on economic measures, over how to keep the deal alive.

Iran responded by saying the path to direct discussions with Washington would have to include the United States returning to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), as the nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers was formally called. But, typical of Trump's haphazard approach to foreign policy, it is not clear who is being eyed as the replacement.

Blanc said he views Trump's offer as very much in line with Trump's desired approach to solving global issues. "But I do worry very much belligerent rhetoric doesn't exist in a vacuum", and there is a risk of "an accidental conflagration" with Iran.

While Iran has lost much of its purchasing capability, Iranian exportation of non-oil related goods is in full swing as foreign buyers are able to get products on the cheap.

Trump continued to double down on his threat to shut down the USA government if Congress does not sign off on his border security proposals, emphasizing that in addition to his long list of measures, "border security includes the wall" he has promised to build on the U.S.'s southern border.
