Bottas and Wolff clarify ‘wingman’ comments

  • Lewis Hamilton was frustrated with Sky F1's commentary team last week

Motorsport Week presents its conclusions from the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Ferrari was lapping up the compliments about having the quickest auto on the circuit and Vettel seemed in the ascendancy after taking a superb pole in Germany.

But the rain in qualifying turned events in Hamilton's favour.

Hamilton won in Hungary after a dominant run from pole position, a big win for Mercedes at a track where they had expected to be weak, the proliferation of slow to medium-speed corners not playing to the strengths of the W09 vehicle.

The Mercedes men made ideal getaways, Hamilton streaking clear and Bottas staying close to resist attacks as Vettel swept inside into third. However, they stopped early to cover off Kimi Raikkonen.

Vettel was runner-up, 17.1sec behind, and survived a late collision with Hamilton's teammate Valtteri Bottas, who also banged bodywork with Red Bull's Australian Daniel Ricciardo.

Yet with five laps to run, Vettel finally fought his way past, with Raikkonen following suit.

That came on lap 65, of the 70, when Vettel finally passed Bottas, the Finn's right front wing touching his rear left tyre under braking, wrecking Mercedes' hopes of a one-two finish.

Was it really that defining?

"We are on equal terms and I trust the team 100% on that". Surely it didn't help.

"You saw in the end that I was a lot of faster than Valtteri but initially I couldn't make it so I sat back and waited for the last 10 laps".

"Can I not just keep going", Verstappen said on the radio.

"Today I had them covered, but had they been on pole, we would have struggled." he admitted. I just feel sad for Valtteri.

Bottas did not take kindly to being branded "the ideal wingman" by Mercedes chief Toto Wolff after the Hungarian Grand Prix. "For sure the team will decide at some point".

Lewis Hamilton got the best possible start to his summer holiday by claiming victory in the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

Last weekend, Bottas was ordered over team radio to "hold position" - in other words not to attack Hamilton - late in the German Grand Prix.

Who will be the first to reach five titles?

Vettel, however, is convinced he can win the title.

Raikkonen said Ferrari needed to improve and "tidy up" a few things to ensure it maximises the speed of its 2018 package, which has been quicker than Mercedes two weekends in a row but failed to turn that into victory. And then Budapest. Ferrari was the favourite.

But with his negotiations with Red Bull continuing to drag on, Ferarri's interest could be reignited. But Hamilton departed as the victor for the sixth time at the Hungaroring.

However, Hamilton could not build on his extraordinary success in his first two seasons and finished either fourth or fifth in the following four seasons for McLaren.

"Absolutely not, and it is far too early to think about that when you consider the ups and downs we have had this year", he replied. But we have learned a lot.

"His tyres were getting worse and worse and I was quite confident I could get him".

"I didn't do myself a favour last week but I think it's part of racing", said Vettel. "But what's really important is that we continue to keep up the pressure and keep working as we have done until now".

"I think we could have done the catching bit, but not really the overtaking. I wanted a better result".

"Of course we know it's impossible for us to do better", he said. As soon as I started to arrive behind the Williams.
