Earlier this month, as The Washington Post has previously reported, Trump grumbled to aides about a question he was asked by Associated Press reporter Jonathan Lemire at his Helsinki news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Portman said he had been concerned about Trump's public statements after his closed-door meeting with Putin in Helsinki "not being consistent and clear with our policies".

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded on the same day that the president is open to Putin's request and anticipates the Russian president visiting Washington early next year.

While 8 percent of Democrats approve of Trump's meeting with Putin, 68 percent of Republicans said they approved of Trump's handling of the summit.

Instead, anger about what some United States lawmakers saw as a too-deferential performance by Trump in Helsinki and his failure to publicly confront Putin over Moscow's alleged meddling in U.S. politics may have made things worse.

He added that he would consider a visit to Washington but noted there must be "necessary conditions", without further explanation.

The indictments of the 12 Russians were issued by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russia.

"At the conclusion of a press event in the Oval Office a reporter shouted questions and refused to leave despite repeatedly being asked to do so", Sanders said in the statement, as reported by CNBC.

The political firestorm has featured prominent members from both parties sharply criticizing the president for his failure to hold Russia accountable for its malicious behavior and choosing the word of the Russian president over that of USA intelligence agencies regarding Russian interference in the 2016 US election.

President Donald Trump calls on a reporter before boarding Marine One on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC.

According to Ms. Collins, she told the White House spokespeople that "You're banning me from an event because you didn't like the questions I asked?"

Democrats scoffed at that notion, citing indictments alleging the Russians directed an election sabotage plan in 2016 created to benefit Trump.

Trump says USA and Russian Federation are both to blame for poor relations. "It can not stand", said the group's president, Olivier Knox.

"Did Michael Cohen betray you, Mr. President?" she asked twice about the lawyer's recording of conversations with Mr. Trump. 'They discussed some new ideas, and they will keep working on them, ' the official said. "He has done nearly three times as many question-and-answer sessions with reporters as his predecessor, and we continue to provide access to the press in a number of venues and formats every day". "But the reaction inside the United States is blocking any dialogue", said one billionaire included in January on a US Treasury list of people deemed too close to the Kremlin, some of whom were later hit with sanctions.

Collins' colleagues and press organizations, among them the White House Correspondents Association, offered their solidarity and criticized "the mistaken decision of the White House to impede access" by the journalist. Much of what we know about Russia's interference in the 2016 elections, including the level of Putin's involvement, comes from human sources.
