Imran Khan’s party is considering inviting PM Modi for oath-taking ceremony

  • Elections agency says Imran Khan won Pakistan's election, but needs a coalition

Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin has urged Pakistan's soon-to-be prime minister Imran Khan to take "bold and positive" calls like the ones he had taken on the cricket field during his time as the captain of the Pakistan cricket team.

He congratulated Khan and "expressed hope that democracy will take deeper roots in Pakistan", the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Fawad Chaudhry, Spokesperson for Imran Khan's party, also did not rule out inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the swearing in ceremony on August 11.

Along with another small party that has protested the election, they would have 125 seats, enough to theoretically prevent Khan from becoming prime minister.

Several key parties in Pakistan have begun to coalesce around Imran Khan, paving the way for him to form a majority in the National Assembly and ascend to the premiership.

Though the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has emerged as the single largest party in the National Assembly after the July 25 elections, the party is still short of numbers to form the government on its own.

All indicators suggest the Pakistan Tehrek-e-Insaf's government - which is likely to take oath next month - will immediately have to approach the IMF for what would be the country's 13th bailout from the fund.

India on Saturday said it desires a prosperous and progressive Pakistan at peace with its neighbours.

Sattar said that based on moral principals, he had "serious reservations" about joining a coalition with Khan's party.

The poll has been marred by long delays in counting and complaints of rigging by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party. In Pakistan, which is on the cusp of having only its second peaceful civilian transfer of power, that doesn't usually happen.

Adding an uncertain political element, Sharif's PML-N party won 127 of 297 seats in the regional parliament in Punjab, the country's largest province with 60 per cent of Pakistan's 200 million people. "I don't think they have this stamina and the support of the people for going for a big movement", said Masood. "We are stuck at square one", he had said. The relationship between the two countries has been one-sided so far and Pakistan has been blamed for all sorts of terrorism in the world. Embracing Khan too early would be a mistake, as it would signal support for the military's management of the electoral process.

"Taking note of the election results in Pakistan, Nauert said the U.S. commends the courage of the Pakistani people, including many women, who turned out to vote and showed resolve to determine their country's future". "We want to improve relations with India, if their leadership also wants it".
