  • Mugabe Holds News Conference Ahead of Election

He swore he would not support the ruling party he controlled for decades at the polls, saying: "I can not vote for ZANU-PF".

When asked by the BBC's Fergal Keane if he would like to see Mr Chamisa win, Mr Mugabe, 94, indicated that he was the only viable candidate.

For all his talk of a "new" Zimbabwe, Mnangagwa's opponents are at pains to remind people that he was a trusted lieutenant of Mugabe for five decades and has failed to deliver on promises of change in the past. He says he is the only Change candidate since his rival represents more of the same.

"What is left now is only one push on Monday to vote - to vote for ZANU-PF so we have a thunderous victory", Mnangagwa told his supporters who filled about half of the 60,000-capacity national stadium at his final rally on Saturday.

In a video clip, the incumbent who ascended to power after intervention by the military declared: "Now that it's clear to all, that Chamisa has forged a deal with Mugabe, we can no longer believe that his intentions are to transform Zimbabwe and rebuild our nation".

Now reduced to an ordinary member of a party he "founded", Mugabe said was being subjected to terrible treatment by his former lieutenants.

Mugabe made the remarks at his Blue roof house in Harare during a press conference.

"This is what l regard as the greatest event that should happen, will reform, will thrust away military form of government and bring us back to constitutionality".

"I was a fool to have him next to me", he said of Mr Mnangagwa, whom he accused of conniving with the military chief to pull off a "coup". "I think it is just Chamisa".

Mnangagwa has welcomed in foreign media and global observers from the European Union, the United States and the Commonwealth, who are watching polling stations across the southern African country.

Elections during Mr. Mugabe's authoritarian rule were often marred by fraud and violence, and this year's campaign has been dominated by accusations that the vote would also be rigged.

The press conference was aimed at "expressing his feelings on tomorrow's elections".

The latest polls suggest that a run-off between the main opposition leader Chamisa and Zanu PF's Emmerson Mnangagwa is a serious possibility.

Mr Chamisa, who became an MP at the age of 25, could become Zimbabwe's youngest president if elected.

With 5.6 million registered voters, the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are expected by Aug 4.

Twenty-three candidates, 19 men and four women, are running for the presidency - all for the first time.
