  • Tour de France LIVE Updates as Geraint Thomas set to become third British winner

Geraint Thomas is set to be crowned the third British victor of the Tour de France in seven years as he produced another superb performance during the penultimate stage today.

Riding for Team Sky, Thomas finished third in the 31-kilometre time trial behind Tom Dumoulin, but still leads the Dutchman by one minute, 51 seconds.

The Welshman accelerated away from Froome and Dumoulin to take the stage win - the second of his career in the Tour - and pocket another 20 seconds plus bonuses, while others were even further back.

Riders on the Champs Elysees as The Patrouille de France flies over the Arc de Triomphe during the 21st and final stage of the 105th edition of the Tour de France in Paris, July 29, 2018.

And just like that, 105th Tour came to an end, with Thomas walking off the podium as the third British Tour champion after Bradley Wiggins in 2012 and Froome in 2013, 2015, 2016 and previous year. "The last time I cried is when I got married".

"The real defining moment was when he had his bad day (on stage 17), but at the same time I was always allowed my own freedom", the Welshman said.

Thomas may have known he had a buffer to play with, but he was not taking it easy as he was fastest through the first and second splits before grinding up the Col de Pinodieta and dropping back.

In winning the second Alpine stage at the summit of La Rosiere, Thomas attacked just as Froome was about to rejoin their small breakaway group.

I felt good and started putting the power down but then took every corner super slow.

It is the sixth British and Team Sky victory in the past seven years.

"I'm going to have a big party for a couple of weeks", he said.

The celebrations have already started, with Thomas enjoying a sip of Champagne with his Team Sky colleagues, while he has also been posing on his bike with the Welsh flag.

He was second after stage nine and took hold of the race leader's yellow jersey on stage 11. "I didn't know anything about split times and I still thought Froome was one second ahead of me when I crossed the line".

"We spend a lot of time together, we train a lot together and I've seen how he's developed over the years".

Thomas was a support rider during Froome's four victories but he emerged as Sky's strongest rider in this race when Froome crashed early on and couldn't keep up in the mountains.

"I think it is important that we think about what we can do to say thanks to Geraint for what he has done for Wales".

"The strongest rider won the Tour de France", Froome said.

France's Julian Alaphilippe and world champion Peter Sagan, of Slovakia, both finished within the time cut and are set to claim the polka dot jersey for the mountain classification and the green jersey for the points classification, respectively. According to Ellingworth, that victory ahead of two-time Tour de France victor Alberto Contador was a turning point.

Roglic moved up to third overall at 2:24 behind Thomas, with Froome now fourth at 2:37.
