"It's a historic day for Assam and India as a whole".
India said on Monday it had excluded more than four million people from a draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the north-eastern state of Assam who could not produce valid documents. We are anxious because people are being made refugees in their own country. In 1983, more than 2,000 suspected Muslim migrants were massacred by a mob in the village of Nellie. He survived by running as hard as he could and hiding behind a bush for days. Almost all were Muslim, and many were children.
The government said the draft was not meant to drive people out and those struck out of the list would have a chance to re-apply. Security has been tightened across Assam.
Assam has been racked by waves of violence over the years as residents, including tribal groups, have clashed with both Hindu and Muslim settlers, whom they accuse of plundering resources and taking away jobs. National Register of Citizens (NRC) of Assam was first prepared in 1951, following the census that year.
"It's a moral victory". No genuine Indian citizens who has been left out, should not worry at all. The BJP and NRC authorities have repeatedly denied the allegations. The draft of Assam's NRC will feature the names, addresses and photographs of all Indian citizens, who have been residing in the north eastern state before March 25, 1971.
■ Existence of name in the legacy data: The legacy data is the collective list of the NRC data of 1951 and the electoral rolls up to midnight of 24 March 1971.
India maintains that hundreds of thousands of people have illegally entered the country from neighbouring Bangladesh over decades and settled down in the northeast. Majority settled in Assam, which has a near-165-mile (270km) border with Bangladesh. "This is just an exercise to isolate the people who can vote positively and those who can't. Whatever is happening is under the supervision of the Supreme Court", Singh said.
The controversial list has been a project of the state government of Assam run by the right-wing Bharaitya Janata party, which came to power in 2016. "Divide and rule will finish the country", she said. The final draft contains names of 28,983,677 citizens and around 40 lakh people have been left out of the list.
The NRC office, however, told the Supreme Court this month that 150,000 people from the first list, a third of them married women, would be dropped from the next one, mainly because they provided false information or gave inadmissible documents.
Abdul Suban, 60, a Bengali-speaking Muslim, said earlier.
The much talked second and final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) has been released on Monday 30 July 2018 where around 2.9 crore names have been included out of the total 3.29 crore applicants. The state's BJP spokesman was not immediately available for comment, but India's home minister, Rajnath Singh, called the registration process impartial.
