A woman who crashed off a coastal cliff in California survived for a week by drinking radiator water from her written-off vehicle. She tells authorities she lost control after swerving to avoid an animal.

She was spotted by a pair of hikers who spotted her yelling for help on Monterey County beach on Friday.

The hikers discovered Ms Hernandez conscious, breathing and with a shoulder injury, sheriff office spokesman John Thornburg said.

The 23-year-old said she survived by drinking water from the radiator of her vehicle. Most automotive antifreeze contains ethylene glycol, which can be fatal in doses of just a few hundred milliliters, though some formulations use safer propylene glycol.

"For her to survive for seven days on the coast with waves crashing over you at times, with injuries that she had, is incredible", Monterey County Sheriff Steve Bernal said.

Hernandez's sister thanked rescuers on her Facebook page. "She was a fighter". Angela is an active social media user and since then, she has not been active. She says she met so many lovely people, ' Isabel added on Facebook thanking everyone who aided in the search and rescue effort.

"She has not shown her family any signs of depression, to be suicidal or any indicators that would explain her unexpected disappearance", it adds.

"She knew that she had to get out of the vehicle, she found a multi-purpose tool in the auto".

Once the window was broken, she said, she jumped into the water and swam until she reached the shore.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said in a statement Friday that Hernandez had been found "by two people walking in the area, who called 911".

She said that she is grateful that the couple found her on the beach. Just one person noticing me. "I couldn't believe that we had finally found each other". Everybody that ... helped us through the whole thing and Angela will be OK. "You're a hero. That's unreal".

Chelsea Moore told KION that Hernandez is here for a reason - "and we were there for a reason".

"My sister is alive, she's talking, and she's still trying to come to understand everything", wrote Angela's sister Isabel Hernandez on Facebook.
