  • Partisan Divide Deepens Over Trump’s Supreme Court Pick

Al Kauffman, a professor at St. Mary's University School of Law, said Kavanaugh has a pretty good chance at getting confirmed based on his qualifications, but it will be a very close vote.

Grassley said a speedy confirmation wasn't necessarily the goal. "This process is not on the level", Fallon said, referring to the Democratic senator's quick rejection of any Trump nominee.

"And he has sent 21 of those 25 women clerks - an impressive 84 percent - on to clerkships at the Supreme Court", they wrote.

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey and 25 Republican state attorneys general sent a letter to Senate leaders Thursday urging the confirmation of Kavanaugh.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, whose panel will hold Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing and eventually vote on whether his nominee should be referred to the full Senate, said he expects the consideration process to be "thorough". When questioned on the matter, White House spokesman Raj Shah claimed Kavanaugh had built up the debt buying baseball tickets for himself and his friends.

As the Senate moves to confirm Judge Brett Kavanaugh's nomination to the Supreme Court, the attendance of one senator is still up in the air: U.S. Sen.

Kavanaugh, who serves on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, is a favorite of the conservative legal establishment because of his long record on issues ranging from the separation of powers and executive privilege to abortion, immigration and gun rights. Of the 28 percent would like to see the ruling reversed, 51 percent were Republicans and 13 percent were Democrats. You have many critics who say that is a cover for a conservative political agenda.

Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh, questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice.

In 2000, Kavanaugh represented pro bono the Miami relatives of 6-year-old Elian, who wanted to keep the child in Miami despite his father's wishes to have custody of him in Cuba.

"There's so many groups on the left declaring war on President Trump's nominee, even before they knew who he was", Graham said in a video posted to his Twitter feed Tuesday.

"There's been some pre-judging - which is unfortunate - before people get to meet him", she said. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska.

Senate Democrats planning to oppose the nominee said that, if confirmed, Kavanaugh would provide the necessary vote to overturn the 1973 Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision.

Every president except for William Henry Harrison (who died after just 31 days in office), Zachary Taylor, and Jimmy Carter has nominated at least one justice to the Supreme Court. He called Kavanaugh "one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time".

"I'm going to vote the way I'm going to vote regardless of what the leader says", Heitkamp told the website.
